AIM quitting unexpectedly
« on: November 08, 2003, 09:17:51 AM »
In a development that seems to be a source of great emotional trauma to my daughter, I've been informed (repeatedly and forcefully) that AIM has begun quitting without warning. I've tried the usual fixit routines--MacJanitor, repair permissions, fsck - y, etc. In a moment of boredom, last night I even updated to OSX.2.8. She's still having those problems. My other daughter doesn't seem to have that problem with her user account when on AIM. I assume somewhere there's a file that should be deleted--or some other fix that I'm not aware of. Any suggestions?

EDIT:  Actually--just tried one other thing--and I'll see if this helps. My daughter had been telling me she had been running the most current version. I found a newer one and will give this a try. Actually, she also had about 4 AIM folders in her user->application folder. I got rid of those extras as well, so we'll see....  Thinking.gif

A couple of IMacs, an iPad, a bunch of iPhones...two of which don’t live here, but I still pay for. Oh yeah, wife, daughters, and yes—a grandson!

"My other daughter doesn't seem to have that problem with her user account when on AIM."

You've compared the differences between the two?

Hi Rob,

Not to savy about AIM here anymore, but how 'bout a corrupt avatar?  (throwing out guesses here)

Also, how 'bout iChat?  Maybe give that a go, instead of AIM.

I use iChat--rarely--but I use it over AIM. She only wants to use AIM. They've got so many of those icon/avatar/profile things going on, I can't imagine trying to compare the two. In the "good old days" of OS9, I'd just trash a preference and probably be good to go. Problem here is that with OSX, I've never been comfortable knowing what to trash and where to find it.

Yep. I installed the latest as one of my attempts to fix the problem.  wallbash.gif

bump.gif Ok, she seems to notice that the problem only occurs when she closes out a window with one of her buddies. (Apparently, she has mulitiple conversations going at once--but yet lacks the ability to listen to even one parent at a time.  rolleyes.gif)

Any ideas? Anyone? "Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?..."biggrin.gif

Trash her caches... /Users/username/Library/Caches/AIM

and/or her AIM prefs if that fails.

EDIT: Didn't you have this very same problem when you first migrated to OS X? Thinking.gif

Thanks kps! Damn--your memory is pretty good. WOW.gif I think (and you may still be right about this) that the problem was with AppleWorks and not AIM. I haven't heard too many complaints about that recently, so I'll assume it's ok. Do you keep notes on the problems all of us have? biggrin.gif

I'll try it this evening and see what happens.

Trash her caches... /Users/username/Library/Caches/AIM

and/or her AIM prefs if that fails.

There's not an AIM related file/folder in her cache folder. The only thing related to AIM in a cache folder is an AIM folder within my user account cache folder. (It's actually a folder and not a file.) None of the other accounts have it in theirs. (Maybe because I'm the administrator??)

Should I assume that deleting it from my cache folder wouldn't do much for her issue?

Ok--sometimes you get lucky and a problem gets solved. I happened to check out VersionTracker this morning and saw that there was an update available for AIM. (Version 4.7b2) When I read the description of "What's new in this version" I was pretty darned pleased to read this:

I did the download/install and so far, according to my daughter, all is well again!!  tongue.gif
