Microsoft Word Standard Toolbar
« on: November 10, 2003, 03:59:08 PM »
Anyone a Microsoft Word expert? I cannot get the standard toolbar to show up. I go to the VIEW menu, select TOOLBARS, then select "standard". A check mark appears next to the word standard, but nary a toolbar shows  up on my screen. Nothing happens. When I uncheck it nothing happens. Checked or unchecked it looks the same. GRRRRR.  All the other toolbars will show up if I check them except the formatting toolbar (the one I need). I'm using Office X and System 10.2.3. If I reinstall Office will all my templates be erased? Thanks everybody.--Joan

The following three files are known to become easily corrupt and cause a myriad of problems. Trashing these will cause them to be rebuilt and often fixes assorted ills. For sure it is worth a try and it cannot hurt.

Go to: user/library/preferences/Microsoft and then trash: Office Font Cache (10), Word Font Substitutes, and Word Settings.

Then, Repair Permissions.

And if that does not work, you might also try-
1. Opening Word
2. In the menu bar, go to Tools->Customize
3. Then in the Toolbars tab, ensure "standard" is checked.

Re saving templates, I am reasonably sure there is a way of doing it, but I don't know how. Sorry.

And finally, have you installed the MS 10.2.5 updater? If not, that may help.

After trashing the three preferences files I launched Word and VOILA! The formatting toolbar is back. Lovely. I followed your directions up until the "Repair Permissions" but I don't know how to do that. I searched through this forum for "how to repair permissions" but couldn't find an answer. Thank you for fixing this problem for me.--Joan

Joan, Glad to hear that it worked and all is again right with the world. But really, Repairing Permissions is one of those things that greatly helps OS X to run smoothly. So-

To Repair Permissions-

1. Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
2. Launch (double click) Disk Utility
3. In the left pane, highlight the volume that you will be Repairing
4.  At the top of the right pane, select the “First Aid” tab
5. Then, on the lower-left click the button that says “Repair Disk Permissions”

This should take a few minutes and conclude with “Permissions Repair Complete”.

It is recommended you do this before and after any upgrade or software install. Also, any time the system is acting unusual. It can’t hurt and it often helps.

I will print this out and DO it. Thanks again, I appreciate this advice. I'll print it out and save it, then mosey down the hall and repair permissions on my husband's mac also. -Joan
