Mac Repair Utility
« on: November 11, 2003, 02:23:23 PM »
I would like to know which repair programs and other utilities  people recommend to do repairs and other things on a Mac.  The ones that I am mainly curious about are Macaroni, Coctail, Onyx and Speed Download. There are probably others that I am not familiar with that would make life on  a Mac a lot easier.

Right now my main OSX utilities are DiskWarrior 3 and MacJanitor. I run MacJanitor to do what it does  wink.gif cron Scripts, cleaning out the stuff that need it, etc. and then I run Permissions and   DiskWarrior for rebuilding the directory if it needs it. I have cocktail but haven't used it for a long time...I really like the way MacJanitor works.

I wish someone would come out with a reliable defragmentation program! I heard Drive 10 works but i haven't bought it and things are changing so fast with the different flavors of OSX
that....well I just wish there was a good defrag utility. I was figuring that maybe Alsoft would come out with an OSX version of PlusOptimizer, but it doesn't look like it. They sure did a heck of a job with DW 3.

I kind of do what Gary does. Except that while I like the way MacJanitor works, I haven't got a clue what the heck it's doing. But it's pretty painless, so what the heck.  Thinking.gif

A couple of IMacs, an iPad, a bunch of iPhones...two of which don’t live here, but I still pay for. Oh yeah, wife, daughters, and yes—a grandson!

Macaroni caused some problems on an earlier system and I never used it again. It may be improved now but I don't know that for sure.

I have used Cocktail, here and there, it appears to be a reliable "Swiss Army Knife"  type application.

Another reliable "Swiss Army Knife" app is OnyX and I've had no problems using most features.

Caution should be observed when using these apps as they can cause system problems if you choose the wrong option or configuration. If you're not sure what you're changing....DON'T.
