Apple ad banned in UK

UK MacUser reports. (You'll have to register to read full story).
QUOTE
The Independent Television Commission has ruled that the ad is 'misleading' and can no longer be shown. Apple insists that the tests used to justify its claims were 'fair and even', but the ITC agreed with the complainants who said that the tests were weighted in the Mac's favour. 'The ITC considered that there was insufficient evidence to support the claim "world's fastest, most powerful personal computer",' says its report.

Wondered why I hadn't seen it lately. But iPod ad keeps turning up.

Well, given things like MacWorld's most recent (Dec '03 issue) set of tests comparing the dual G5 and various PC's, they really can't make the claim that the G5 is the fastest "personal computer" in all real-world situations. The PC's beat the G5 in 5 out of 6 tests, though the G5 performed very respectably. (Oddly, they say that the PC's beat the Macs in 4 out of 6 tests...they seem to have some difficulty in tallying their own results...) One interesting conclusion that they came to was that M$ Office really is optimized to run on a PC (why are we not surprised?  dry.gif ). The PC's were twice as fast on Find and Replace in a Word document. Granted, we're talking 6 seconds vs. 12, but still.

Anyway, it isn't all about the speed, is it? If it was, we'd all be sitting here discussing our latest Polywell Poly Stations or Alienware Auroras. The good thing is that the G5's do VERY WELL in many tests. And while speed may have something to do with time spent accomplishing tasks, what about all that time spent in applying those weekly bandaids for Windoze?

It's unfortunate that Apple chose to advertise something that was clearly disputable. It would have been far better if they'd somehow found a way to trumpet the obvious large speed hikes, along with all the other benefits of the Mac OS. I still wonder if the reason that they have never claimed that it is a virtually "virus-free" operating system is because as soon as they do, you can bet that all those little Apple-hating script-kiddies out there will set out to write a whopper. That and the fact that .Mac has that anti-virus component, which might become a hard sell if you go around telling everyone it's a virus-free OS. wacko.gif

I have a G4 iMac 700 mhz and a P4 2.4 ghz.  When i tested to see which was faster, the iMac out did the PC all the way.

Both systems have 512 mb ram, iMac PC 133 and the P4 has 512 2100, iMac has a 32 mb video car and the PC has a 64 mb video card, iMac has a 40 gig hd and the PC has an 80 gig hd.

I run itunes on both, but the iMac runs faster and smoother that the PC version.  Adobe, Appleworks, IE vs. Safari, I as well have IE on the Mac too...

The internet on the iMac is much, much faster than on the PC that I have.  I am on high-speed dsl.

Bottom line, the Mac runs better than a PC ever will, PC's are too messed up with a poorly written OS (MS) that controls the user instead of the user controlling the computer.

Until Apple writes an OS for the PC users (maybe someday it will happen) Apple will always out perform PC's in just about every way possible.

Computer Style, faster OS's and of course ease of use and installs.

I use my imac daily, and the PC is a dust collector, sad, but true...

I do use the both of them, but the iMac out performs my 2.4 ghz P4 all the way.....

Failed to keep up with threads, so seem to have duplicated Sandbox's. Suggest any more posts on this subject go on his thread (just to keep things tidy!).
 Sorry, SB!

I wonder what Macworld was thinking when they performed those tests using 1GB of RAM? Are they into Apple bashing now?

Ever since the G5 hit the streets, the professional community who require the speed will tell you that the machine doesn't shine until it is packed with 4-8 GB of RAM!

It would be interesting to see the same tests done with each machine set up optimally.

When it comes to speed, all I have to do is think of some of my older Macs that ran System7x
like my LCll and I'm happy. I'm talking about before I had a PPC.  It used to take me 10-15 minutes to run some 3rd party Photoshop filters! I won't even talk about the days before with the MacPlus.  smile.gif

I'm happy. smile.gif

Bruce, they were trying to keep the hardware specs somewhat similar, and "off the shelf". The argument could be made that the PC would have been faster with more RAM too (both will take up to 2 GB)...but this way, at least the hardware (including video cards) are as similar as they could get them.

At some point, one has to wonder how fast is fast enough...quibbling over a couple of seconds here and there starts to seem a bit silly. Ease of use and other considerations mean more once a certain threshold is reached, IMHO.
