very disappointing back up- SilverKeeper
« on: December 26, 2003, 09:15:37 AM »
I've been using SilverKeeper for some time now to back up my files to an external drive.  Just today, I decided to run the "Compare" to check out my back up sets immediately after running the back ups.  Unfortunately, I found that SilverKeeper failed to reliably back up my most important files- some created in Office X and my Quicken files.  When running "compare", that dates were identical, but the sizes were different.  When I opened each file to compare, the file that I assumed was backed up was an older file.  What frustrates me is that just 2 weeks ago, I wiped my drive clean to install Panther.  I dragged over all my files after the install, assuming each file was identical to the originals.  Now, I have financila files and inventory files that I can safely say are not up-to-date.  And I don't know where or how to go back to the original just before I wiped the drive.  Is this what I wshould expect with back up software (even though it is free from Lacie), or should I expect more reliability?  Now I have to revert to manual drags to guarentee reliable back ups.  Where else can I turn for a reliable back up system?  Should I have to compare files to make sure of its reliability?!

The old saying You only get what you pay for may apply here. I haven't used Silverkeeper, so I can't say for sure.

I use Tri-Backup, but it's about $49.00. There are others cheaper and more expensive.

With any backup program, use it daily for at least a week and compare the backups everyday to make sure there are ok.

I use Tri-Backup daily for all my important files, runs in the background. Works great.

Just downloaded and am trying out Deja Vu.  1.  The cursor on my Pismo is very jittery and unpredictable when doing the initial backup.  2.  I did a get info on the original folder of files and the destination folder and there is a discrepancy in the bytes taken up.  Shouldn't it be an exact copy, bytes and all?  How am I supposed to know what didn't copy over?  Is there some sort of invisible files?  The source folder is nearly a meg larger.

Are both the drives formatted for HFS+?  Double check to be sure as that may account for the file size discrepancy. Even so if you have paritioned a small drive so the volumes are smaller than 1G, I believe the 4k file minimum doesn't hold true.
