Need to upgrade Eudora Light, running 8.6
« on: December 24, 2003, 12:42:58 PM »
Hi, All,

Happy Holidays, or HOWLIDAYS if you have pups!

I'm having an e-mail problem.   I'm using Eudora Light 3.1 on my PowerMac G3 (OS 8.6).  Don't wanna do anything more than what I have except to get a better version of Eudora Light.

I'm getting loads of spam on Eudora now--the e-mail addy used to be *only* for my school and personal contacts, but now it's like someone has glommed onto this e-mail addy and my IN box is full of crud!

I have a filter, but I can only use it AFTER I get the junk e-mail, and they come from all kinds of sources so that's more trouble than its worth for what I'll get from it.

Any suggestions for where to download a free, more recent Eudora Light that will suit my OS 8.6 ?   (Kindly remember I'm not "all that" with this computer stuff!!!)

I'm going out of state for a couple of weeks, and have this thought that I won't be able to get into my e-mail cuz it'll be too jammed up with junk for me to even open it!

Smiles,
Sooz

Merry CHRISTmas Eve, Sooz!

First, I assume you mean 'a couple hundred' filters! Thinking.gif And the longer you use this account the more you will need.

Second, you are correct that to use the filters in Eudora you have to download the junk first. But that will be no different in a new version, upgraded version or practically any other e-mail program. That doesn't mean you will see any of them, but it does mean your connection will be slow while they are downloading.

I am happy with a solution that solves both problems for me called POPmonitor.

There are other similar programs but they all do basically the same thing - they look at your messages without downloading them. Filters can then be set to delete/flag/block/etc them. Usually you will want to simply flag things until you are satisfied that the filters are doing what you want. The better programs will log the messages/domains that are deleted so you can check to be sure that you aren't trashing good ones by mistake! POPmonitor seems to be well maintained, runs great on 9.1 (and lower, I assume) as well as X. It lets you read most of a messages text if you want to. It has cut down on what I actually download and read in Eudora by at least 50%.

Hi Sooz,

I used Eudora Light for eons until I finally upgraded to Eudora 5.2.1b2 to access extra features. I run it in the unpaid format which gives you a tiny ad window that is barely noticeable and you can put it anywhere out of the way. Occassionally when I go off into another app and return to Eudora there is a window that says something to the effect that Eudora has noticed something is covering the ad. That always makes me chuckle.

Anyway, you will have to create the filters to divert spam as before but you can import all old mailboxes and addresses without problem in the upgrade.

I used PopMonitor for several months and I loved it. Unfortunately my ISP (ATT) recently did some "upgrading" to their mail servers and now PopMonitor doesn't work. I get a message that the server doesn't recognize IUDLs or something like that so I can't remotely delete spam which is the main reason for having the application. I wrote to the author of the program who immediately wrote back and told me that my problem had happened to a few other people and on some occassions he was able to get through to the ISP to get them to fix the problem on their end. I wrote and complained to ATT through their forums but got the usual "we'll pass the info on to the mail people" yadda, yadda.  It hasn't been fixed so I have to download all the spam now and if the filters don't get them I just drag through the list and delete.

Anyway, Eudora has been good to me and I'm happy with its performance. smile.gif
