Sorry Kelly,

That message was initially typed up very fast and without much thought.......

It's for a Titanium G4 that the CD drive mechanism failed on.....I figgered it would be just as cheap to replace it with an external burner by the time you get bench labor in at one of the Mac shops in the region (it would have to be taken to the city with me and I know that the Mac tech shops in KC AREN'T cheap).

Figured it may be an easier and actually more effective solution, since they could use the burner as both a normal CD-rom drive for music playback (if the drive supports it) and also be able to burn.

I looked at a Plextor external some time ago at Best Buy (who I don't really frequent, so it's been quite some time), but the external USB model was like $99.

I figger bench labor in the city will be at least $75, so the cost for the burner is nearly paid for.........and that's without the replacement part....

That said, I need to find prices on them....from linkmeisters like yourself.

Also need prices on a replacement board for that iMac....

I would not bother with USB Chris.

A Titanium Laptop could only use USB 1.0

I'd get an IDE Burner like the one I just bought and Firewire case.

Those both looked like HD enclosures.

Does that place have external burner enclosures, or does it have a snap-off faceplate to accommodate CD drive use, or what?

You're right Chris. That looks like Hard Drives only.

As for replacing the logic and video boards on a magenta (do you mean "grape"?), the logic board (with onboard video) seems to run about $129 - from http://www.microdocusa.com/pricelist.html

BTW, these sell for just over $200 to $300 on eBay. So you might want to weigh that against the time/trouble/cost of repair.

I bought this USB 2.0 case from PowerOn for $41.00. I'm using as an external hard drive, but it'll take a CD, but it's not bootable.

Thanks. I think I'll look at that enclosure with one of the CD-RWs that Kelly pointed out to me (the Lite-On models seem to be pretty solid). Not sure that the guy will want to do $300 if I can install the board for $150 (family friend deal that I agreed to help with). I'll mention it, though.

I can assure you it will work with a CD drive. It has a plate in the front that when removed allows the full "face" of the drive to show.

However I used mine to house a new Western Digital 120GB drive. (thanks again Santa!)

It's a nice unit. It's mostly a silver gray plastic case with darker edge strips. The inside has a full sheetmetal bottom, metal backpannel and internal power and fan. The fan is pretty quiet too!

Here is an interface transfer rate comparison:

USB 1.1 ......................................... 12MB per second

Firewire 400 (1394a) .................. 400MB per second

USB 2 ............................................ 480MB per second

Firewire 800 (1394b) .................. 800MB per second

Serial ATA ..................................... 1.5GB per second

Also note that a non-OEM CD drive won't work natively you'll need a third party driver like "Toast".

Or "hack" the Apple CD/DVD driver (OS 9) using ResEdit.
