Trouble with .pkg's
« on: December 30, 2003, 04:59:26 AM »
i've had this problem installing software, I'll get to a point where i need to open a pkg file, which never opens. this has happened with downloads like an itunes update, and now i cant install the software for my powermate. anyone know how to fix this?   huh.gif it might be a problem with the installer program, which refuses to launch.
(using 10.2.8)

Had a few problems opening pkgs at Christmas, usually the ones with alot of tape. I resorted to a pocket knife.  Devilish2.gif

But, I don't know what a .pkg file is. Sorry.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

After I read the first two words in the topic, I was hoping the third word would be "tribbles" biggrin.gif

Anyhow, .pkg files arepackaged applications. All the needed parts of the applications are in the pkg, and the Apple installer puts the files where they should be.

It sounds like your biggest problem is with the Installer application. Check the Console for any crash logs associated with the Installer. To do so, goto /Applications/Utilities/ and open Console. In the Console, goto the File Menu->OpenQuickly->~/Library/Logs->CrashReporter And see if you can find the log for the Installer. If there is one, tell us what it says, that may give a clue t why it is not working.

Megatron. Hello. Welcome to the Forum. smile.gif

"These are Package files. The default application that opens them is  Installer. If, for some reason, Installer isn't opening and installing the package contents, you can ask it to be the default app for pkg files."

http://www.dotmac.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1059

If that doesn't work it may be a Corrupt Download.

Have you Repaired permissions lately?

Mike just beat me to it. smile.gif

thanks for replying. i know its not a corrupt download, because i took it off the installer CD. I've tried copying it to the desktop, launching it straight from the disk, and downloading it from versiontracker. ive repaired disk permissions lately, too. i couldnt find a log for just the installer program, i did find this in the main console log, maybe it can give a clue:
Installer[424] Unable to load nib file: PagedInstaller.nib, exiting
Dec 27 13:35:48 -----Computer /sbin/autodiskmount[203]: UnmountDisk('disk2s1s2') unmount('/Volumes/PowerMate CD') failed: 16 (Device busy)
----
i think its just saying it was having trouble ejecting the cd here.
oh, it also came with a version for os 9, that installed just fine. i downloaded a copy of USB overdrive, and it has the same problems, an unopenable pkg file. can i reinstall the installer program?

I'm not sure what your problem is. Everything else ok?  huh.gif

You could try running the 10.2.8 Combo Update on your System.

Or if that doesn't help, do an Archive and Install.

Good info here.

Jaguar Troubleshooting.
