MacroMedia Flashplayer 6.0.79.0 install problem
« on: March 06, 2003, 02:21:00 PM »
Has anyone downloaded and installed the Flashplayer update? I have down loaded both the .bin and .hqx versions of the installer (from MacUpdate). I am unable to expand the bin-version (http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/flash/english/macppc/6.0.79.0/flashplayer6_macppc.bin) with Stuffit Expander 7.0. Expande quits without doing anything to the .bin file. I can expand the .hqx version (http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/flash/english/macppc/6.0.79.0/flashplayer6_macppc.bhqx) without any difficulty. However, when I start the Flashplayer Installer, click on Internet Explorer and then on Install, the Installer gives me error message that it is unable to find the indicated browser.

I have Flashplayer version 6.0 r61 installed in Internet Plugins Folder in System Folder on PowerMac 7200/90, OS 8.6.

Rongold, I successfully installed it on three different volumes, so it would seem that the Flash update per-se is not the problem.

I hate to ask... but, there are two different versions of 6.0.79- one each for OS X and for Classic. You are using the correct one?

The updaters I used were via VersionTracker. Should you care to download (again), both versions are available at http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcg...id=11622&db=mac

Sorry for the weak response.

I downloaded the Classic version again - from both Version Traker and MacUpdate. Version Tracker provides on .bin form, while update provides links for both hqx and bin forms of the file.

I tried Stuffit Delxue 7.0 this time rather than Stuffit Expander. The only difference is that Stuffit Deluxe gives me an error message after failing to expand the bin files: "An internal program parameter was invalid (17523)." The hqz file is expanded, but still fails to install anything because it claims it cannot find Internet Explorer.

I tried to get to MacroMedia website itself, but have not been able to access for past 24 hours. Downloading site stalls everytime.

Here is a long-shot idea...Are you trying to expand/install the software with your extensions disabled?  These days some installers need all extensions running in order for the installer to work properly...

I came of age computer-wise when it was desirable to disable all extensions prior to running an installer, but apparently that is not the case in 2003.

Like I said, it's a long-shot.  Your problem could also indicate that the installer was corrupted during the downloading process.

Let us know what finally works!

Ron, I just DL the Classic version without problem. It's beginning (IMNHO) to sound like the reason you can't get a good install is that the DL is always corrupt. I don't know why this is happening, but wonder if virus checking is involved.

At any rate, if you send me an email with your email address I'll send a clean Flash Classic installer to you (it's only 872KB). While this is no guarantee of success, we should be a bit smarter than we are now.

I have had no difficulty downloading the installer. I've done it twice from MacUpdate and once from Version Tracker. The problems arise after downloading:

1. Stuffit Expander fails to expand the .bin versions of the Installer because of an invalid internal program parameter (whatever that is).
2. Expander does expand the .hqx version of the Installer, but then the Installer fails to work. I've tried it with all extensions on, all extensions off, after moving the Internet Explorer Folder to the desktop, etc. The Installer reports it cannot find Explorer.

Are there any significant improvements in version 6 r79?

Problem solved. The Flash Shockwave Installer was giving me correct information in stating the it could not find Internet Explorer. When IE failed to launch (I use KeyQuencer to assign F-keys to launch programs), I checked the Internet Explorer Folder and found that IE was missing! Since I use iCab as my default browser, I don't know who deleted IE from my hard drive. Upon reinstalling IE, Shockwave Installer installed the r79 update in the Plug-Ins Folder.

I still don't understand why the downloaded .bin version of the Installer could not be expanded with Stuffit Expander 7.0.

FWIW....

Macromedia Inc. is warning its users of what it calls a critical security flaw found in the latest version of its Flash animation player. It is advising customers to immediately install a new version just released on its Web site which should fix the security hole.
Macromedia says up to 75 percent of computers worldwide run its player.
In its alert, the company said the vulnerability involves the player's "sandbox," which acts as a safety zone between a user's system and code downloaded from the Internet to be run within the player. The flaw, which would let an attacker create a buffer overflow, could enable an attacker to gain access to a user's system.
Macromedia recently appointed a chief security officer, who company officials say will work with developers and with the security community to bring "relentless" focus on the security of its applications.

Hey, Bob, maybe I was blind last night. On reading that I went to Macromedia, found the site has changed radically since last I looked, but no trace of the problem you mention. Tried the downloads page, a search, the press room and the site map.
D'you have a direct link to this flaw, please?

Mr. T,
I went through the same thing with their site.
Download it from VersionTracker (Harvs link). I got the new version 60r79 without the letter included. What it seemed to do is update the one I installed the other day from Harvs link.

The link about the flaw: www.macromedia.com/v1/handlers/index.cfm?ID=23821. There, is the latest DL also.

But no mention is made if there is a Classic fix or even if the problem applies to Classic. At least none that I have found (yet). Does anyone know for sure?

I can't get there from here. The Macromedia website is inaccessible using iCab 2.9.1, presumably because of some of javascript used there. I can download the Flash Installer using iCab via either Versiontracker or MacUpdate.

I accessed the above link using Internet Explorer and downloaded both the hqx and bin versions of the Flash 6 installer (for OS 8.6 or Classic). The Installer on the Macromedia download page appears to be identical to that I downloaded several days ago: same version r79, identical size, identical creation and modification dates.

I still an unable to expand the bin formated version of the Installer, whether I download it with iCab or IE.

Thanks, Bill, and Harv for the link.
Thd Macromedia site also misbehaves now with Camino (ex-Chimera). It's sluggish, but at least it loads.

Taliesin, and others,

Sorry I didn't get back quicker with a reply... The original message came to me at work from our in-house net/software person to 'all' as an FYI type item.  Not sure how he received it.
Glad to see someone found a link to a mention of the problem or I would have been     .

Thanks,  Bob K.
