Force quit is Deadly
« on: March 09, 2003, 08:43:00 PM »
Hi All,
I'm am so used to using the Force Program Quit = apple+ option +esc keys, to force a locked up program that I can't seem to remember to stop using it.

I had to initalize my hard drive at Apple Tech's  suggestion. I had everything backed-up and lost no information, just put back the programs and files, but not the old operating system. I now have a few bugs  I can't over come. One being the force quit command. If I have a program that is locked up (everthing else is ok) and I use the above mentioned key combination the entire computer is then locked up. Dead as a door nail until restarted. I'm clueless on how to fix this. Any sugesstions?

Are you having a lot of frozen apps? If so, it sounds like you may have some software conflicts. Check your applications and make sure you have all the updates needed to play nice with 9.2.2.  Any particular combination that causes this to happen?

As far as the Com+Op+esc, if the application itself is the cause of the freeze then you should be able to get out of it with the system still running. But if the freeze is caused by an interaction with another program or the OS itself, then a total lockup is not that unusual. When I run IE, Eudora, Sherlock (and sometimes others) and go online, it is a rare evening that a lockup doesn't happen and a restart required. They all just don't run smoothly when online together. Even when you have to force quit and the OS (finder) stays running, you are on thin ice as to when the OS will go down eventually.

That's one of the reasons X was developed. Though I have had to restart a few times even in X when Classic apps are force quit or X apps barf .

Thanks  kps, downloaded and will install.

Is it just me or does anyone else get irked when they see a strictly Mac application with instructions to use the "Alt" key?

Kris,

I too get "hot under the collar" when alt is requested or even worse when "right click" is required. I assume in this case alt is the option key. Am I correct?

But of course, MM.

LLH, if krissel is right, here's an unusual place for some traditional help, short of resorting to Conflict Catcher.
Thank you, kps, for that little gem - plus the warning about the racket it makes.

Ambrosia has been a Mac developer ever since I can remember, I think that's their little joke playing on the all too commonly known Windows salute.
