Buying yet another external drive

Time for me to get another external drive, these image files keep taking space.

One lists this as Mac requirements:

FireWire 400: Macintosh with FireWire 400 interface, either built in or via 3rd party PCI FireWire 400 card. FireWire 400 requires Mac OS 8.6 or later.

I'm not familar with Firewire 400. I use OS 10.3.2 on a Tibook 667 (one of the earliest TiBooks).

No Thomas. Firewire 400 is the "old" standard. 800 is new. smile.gif

Your machine almost certainly has the Firewire 400 Ports not 800.

I think it's to avoid confusion that the marketing types have tacked on the "400" - same as USB is now often identified as 1.1 or 2.0.

Depending on your future upgrade plans, you may want to consider getting a drive enclosure that has the FireWire 800 option as well as the FW 400 option - it will cost a bit more, but give you forward compatibility.

In my search for the perfect drive enclosure I have also found Firewire 400/USB 2.0 combo enclosures.

Thomas, Circuity City currently has a Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM/8MB buffer IDE drive  for $139 after $110 in rebates.  Last month I paid $129 after rebates for a 200GB drive.   So far that 250GB price is the best I have come across.

You know, I've just never trusted rebates.

This drive will probably be dedicated to a single, week-long shoot I have coming up and may even be sold to the client, so I don't need something as large as 250 gig right now.

I thought that was the deal with Firewire 400; just wanted to be sure. Thanks

That's too bad...I have redeemed dozens of rebates over the years and I have never had a single problem.  With a rebate this large I get a Certified Mail receipt just in case I need to prove that the paperwork was postmarked by the deadline.
