A "Panther" favor, if you please
« on: February 01, 2004, 11:57:07 AM »
I have a favor to ask of anyone running 10.3.2.

I am attempting to determine if I have a "full" install of Netscape 7.1 in my Panther Applications Folder. It (the app itself) appears to work satisfactorily, BUT . . .

All that shows is the usual blue, circular NS 7.1 icon. No Netscape Folder in Applicaitons, or anywhere else I can determine.

If any of you, out there in TeeEss Land, have a similarly set-up Panther (i.e. w/NS 7.1) would you be so kind as to look and see if you can find a Folder for Netscape, residing somewhere on your HD.

Why do  I thiink this important?

I'm attempting to find an NS Profile Manager . . . somewhere. Not having a visible/viable NS Folder has made that task impossible. Thinking.gif

Thanks for the help/advice.

Hi Dick,

I don't use Netscape all that often (I'm using Safari) but I do have an installation of Netscape 7.1.  A search of my hard drive revealed only three items with the word Netscape in it.  The application itself residing in the Applications folder, The "com.netscape.mozilla.plist"  residing in the preferences folder in the user library, and   "NetscapeGecko1.4MacOSX2003062405"  residing in the application support folder in the user library.

I assume that you may need to do your user profile managing from within the application.  I think I will poke around with Netscape a bit.

Dick, I have Netscape on my PowerBook. A quick search for Netscape shows:
  • com.netscape.mozilla.plist
  • Netscape (the application icon)
  • NetscapeGecko1.4MacOSX2003062405
There seems to be no Profile Manager, so Netscape Help is not correct in stating that to create a new Profile one should look in the Netscape folder.

I wonder if  having multiple users is no longer an option for Netcsape since you are really supposed to set up seperate user accounts from within OS X.  Each user's preference file will bring up a new user account in the netcape App?

Steve:

Very  sound reasoning. I simply had not considered that possibility.

Bruce:

Thanks  for the additional confirmation that I  hadn't lost (the rest of) my marbles in not being able even to find  the trusty NS folder with all it's traditional goodies of Mail, Bookmarks and Addresses.

Thanks, again, to both of you.

This helps persuade me that perhaps the Mozilla ReadMe is behind the curve and that Profile duplication may not  be the problem once deemed so important.

At least I  guess I have the option of "trying" a Mozilla install on my new iMac, since I have little mail filed thereon, plus I have both export address files and bookmarks from my soon-to-be-retired beige G3, should NS 7.1 be spectacularly defenestrated by Mozilla . . .err . . .sumthin'

The folder you're looking for is Mozilla;

user>Library>Mozilla>Profiles

Yes, my sister running OS8.6 and NS7.02 has the Profiles folder in document>mozilla>profiles, but she still also has a Netscape folder on her HD with a Netscape Profiles Manager in it where from she can manage profiles.

It must be dropped in OS X...  huh.gif

Bingo!

Sure enough there they are. (In the interim, since starting this thread, I decided to bite the bullet and try a Mozilla install.) But . . . where is Profile Manager to create those little puppies?

Interestingly, the first window that appeared upon opening the downloaded Mozilla 1.6 was, surprise, surprise, a Profile Manager, which listed my Netscape profile and allowed for the possibility of making a duplicate - - for safety's sake.

I did.

It apparently worked w/o incident. Import controls are available for addresses, bookmarks and maybe mail.

Whew.

Anxiety about "non-events" is such a bore!   sleep1.gif

DB  Should you ever hear - - in those exotic NS circles you frequent - - whatever happened to Profile Manager, it would be interesting to read about it here.

I posted this in the other thread, but just in case someone misses it....

- The Profile Manager lets you create different profiles, each with its own bookmarks, preferences, email settings, and other user-specific settings. To work with profiles, you must first exit the browser, then to open the Profile Manager:
