Personal File Sharing in Panther

I have Personal File Sharing enabled in 10.3.2. And for my home network (Airport), it works great. But I just noticed that when I restart, this service is no longer enabled and I must re-enable it. (I seldom need to restart so this may have been occurring for quite some time.) This condition is even true when Sharing is locked. At the next restart, the lock is reopened and sharing is not active.

Maybe this condition has always been that way and I have just missed it. Does anyone know if that is the normal condition? If not, any suggestions re what I can do to remedy the situation? FWIW, I Repaired Permissions, and DiskWarrior & Repair Disk both indicate no problems.

FWIW, Harv, I shut down (formally and officially     ) both of my Macs last night.

When I saw this thread, I checked their File Sharing panels and found no change.

Panther Poltergeists along the Potomac, perhaps?

Thanks Sir Kelly. That link was informative, but I was still unable to use it in resolving the issue, if there even is one.

As an experiment, I checked to see if that sharing condition also exists on a different drive. And yes it does.! I keep the two drives much the same, so if I installed some software that is causing this, it is reasonable to expect a similar result. But if the problem is a result of corruption or some such, then the likelihood of an identical problem is remote.

Of late I have installed the latest Security update, an Airport update, and MenuMaster. Perhaps one of these is at the heart of the matter.

Is this another of those 'trash the .plst file and restart the program' problems that I kept seeing before I jumped off the clift!

I have a problem with new Finder windows not opening in Column mode, even though the prefs show I have that as my choice. I'm not yet comfortable enough with X to start 'messing' with system files, even if they are 'only' .plst ones. I don't even know if that is the correct suffix!

To close this out--the short version:

There is a known issue where Personal File Sharing stops when it is not connected to a network, Apple Knowledge Base Document 107367 (see Kelly's comment above).

In my case, I had my System Preferences/Network, Airport, configured to: By Default Join: "Automatic."

So when I restarted, file sharing stopped because a defined/specific network could not be found (the automatic ain't really that automatic). Ergo, the solution was making the change to: "By Default Join a specific (Pendragon) network."

And all is again right in the Pendragon kingdom.
