Need help upgrading and keeping infos.
« on: March 21, 2003, 03:15:00 PM »
Hi all,

I was working on my Girlfriend's machine

(300Mhz Orange Clamshell Ibook, 64Mb Ram, soon to get a 256Mb boost when I receive it next week)

It was dog slow with OS 8.6, Netscape 4.06 (or 4.7). and running all around badly.

I performed a clean install of OS 9.2  I immediately saw great improvements.

Clicked on Netscape, and installed Netscape 7.0.

Here are my issues:

1)
I am afraid I lost all of her stored mail, bookmarks, and contacts that were in Messenger 4.x

2)
Netscape 7 simply does not want to run...It stays idle for 3-4 minutes before windows appear, then freeze, I have a hard time getting to anything.

My questions:
1)
Is there ANY way I can retreive the mail preferences (Bookmarks, contacts, kept mail) ?

2)
Is Netscape 7 that much of a dog, or does it need more processor speed/ram, or is it badly installed ?

3)
Again, any way of retreiving the info I think I might have lost...She would literally kill me....

Thanks a bunch folks !

Welcome back to TS.

I think the main reason you aren't getting Netscape 7 do work is the memory requirement. It needs a relatively large assignment of RAM and with only 64 you are barely able to run the system and very much else, especially that browser. When you put in the new chip you should see an improvement. Just be sure to assign more memory to Netscape.

As far as the prefs, etc. from previous version, if you did a Clean Install there should be somewhere a "Previous System Folder" in it which has the old information. Look for the Netscape users folder and copy over the info you need to the new system Netscape user folder. I'm not a regular Netscape user so more experienced players will hopefully come along to verify or correct my assumption.

Let us know what you find.

NS 7 no longer stores mail, bookmarks, and contacts in the system folder>preferences.

When you migrated, NS moved all of that to your startup partition/drive>Documents>Mozilla>Profiles>Default>some string of numbers/letters.slt  Mozilla Registry and Mozilla Versions are the only "NS things" left in your system folder.

Can you downgrade to 4.7x and reimport the profile?  I don't think so.  There may be a work around using Outlook, setting it as the default mail program and importing from the NS 7 profile, and then resetting NS and reimporting but I haven't tried it.

64M is not enough.  On iMac 333, OS 9.1 is using 30M and NS 7 is using 29 of 35M assigned.

NS 7 does take a bit more time to load, somewhat disconcertingly longer.  Windows users can disable the startup splash screen, haven't found a way, yet, for us.

A great resource is the Netscpae Unofficial FAQ

Another GREAT resource is  Windows BBS/Netscape Forum Ramona (Old Indian, here), the moderator of that forum also has  Netscape Solutions

and from snews://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.netscape7.macintosh
quote:
Back up any emails you want to save you have already have within the inbox of Netscape7

(Documents Folder > Mozilla Folder > profile folder > xxx.slt folder (xxx being a random patern of letters and numbers) Duplicate your inbox folders (option drag to another location).

Now:

back out and remove your Mozilla Folder to Trash. Locate Mozilla Registry and Mozilla versions file in system > preferences Folder move to Trash. (Do not empty trash yet)

Then Open Netscape 7

allow netscape 7 to convert your Communicator profile. (It does not affect your Communicator profile just reads it.)

when Completed netscape 7 will open.

Close Netscape 7 then locate profile manager.

open profile manager.

choose to manage profiles and then rename.

Rename to Netscape7 (example).

once renamed netscape 7 should open again. Close netscape7

At this point, if you mozilla go to application in mozilla folder with Migration in Name.

open. when window open you will see the communicator Profile shown its icon should be shown in I belive green and white. (will look different than Netscape7's .

click on this icon and click on Migrate. if you choose the right one the Communicator Profile will convert once again.

when complete Mozilla will open. Quit mozilla.

Now use the profile application (Profile manager) to open. once again to manage profiles. Again change profile name (should be same name as the communicator profile). This time use Mozilla (for example) when complete Mozilla should open.

At this point you'll have to distinct profiles but they will be identical to your Communicator profile except for the netscape7 or Mozilla Components. Mozilla for some reason won't convert your Filter Rules but Netscape 7 will.

Now locate the backed up inbox folders and change there names by adding a number 2 or above. Then drag these files into the inbox of the netscape7 profile.

This will retain the mail you wanted to backup. now open Netscape 7.

after your satisfied with everything then empty system Trash.
