Cross platform eMail editing, can it be done?
« on: April 01, 2003, 04:23:00 AM »
This in volunteer support of a local track team. Is it easily possible to take an IE eMail list that is to be used on Windoz and adapt it in any way on a Mac?

Specifically, they want to be able to eMail the total list while hiding the recipient list.

If anyone is aware of a way that we could do this on our Mac so it would transport (via eMail) to a Windows platform, I'd be not only thankful; I'd be amazed.

Lacking that. Is there any way a Win person (you) can explain how to do this to a Mac person (me) that can then be explained to a Win person (her).

Complicating the problem, when I asked her what browser she used she said Windows Yahoo! Is there a foolproof way to do this? By the way the browser turned out to be (surprise) IE.

Rog-Don't you ever sleep?

Is she using Yahoo to mail the recipents?  What I'm asking, are the addresses stored on Yahoo or on her computer?

If on Yahoo...I think you can have her create an email with all the addresses, email it to you, you can hit "Reply ALL" and when your email message comes up, you will have every addy, and then you can either copy and paste into your address book, or better yet, create an address book "Track Group" and copy paste each addy into the newly created addy book.  Then when you send a message, create the email, hit the "Address" button, navigate to "Track Group", Select All, and hit the button "Bcc".  Depending on your mail client (of course), you may have to then change your own addy to "To" for the mail to go out.

If the addresses are stored locally, in her email client, she can go to "Address Book" then under "Tools" do "Export", save the file to her desktop, then email you, attaching the file to the email.  You would download the file to your desktop, and in your email client, open "Address Book" and under "Tools", import the downloaded file.  You'll probably lose some info in the "Import", but the major portion will be there, and you can add the itsy bit of missing info.
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

WOW! Can you believe that a PC user wants to actually hide the mailing list?! That's gotta be a first!

All that's required is to put the list in the 'BCC' field instead of the 'To' field. How to do that on Yahoo may be your problem.

Simplest way would be for her to just send you the list. It can be a simple text file. She must already have them in a 'group,' so it shouldn't be that hard. If nothing else, just have her copy and paste them into an e-mail to you. Then you can copy and paste them into your address book.

When you need to send a message, go to the address book and select the list (appropriately named) and hit the 'BCC' button (which is hopefully there!). In Eudora that will automatically bring up a message form with your addy in the From, the list in the BCC and the cursor waiting in the To field. I usually just put myself in there again. Add a title, compose the message (or import it) and hit Send. Just like a regular message!

Of course, if any of these messages have been sent with everyone in the 'To' field, then all you have to do is copy that list and paste it in your 'book. No need for her to do anything.

And don't forget to congratulate her on this added privacy/security method.
