Mail - How to Move Panel from Rt to Lft
« on: April 05, 2003, 08:31:00 AM »
I can't figure out how to move the panel that displays mail in, out, sent, etc. It currently is on the right side and I'd like to move it to the left side. I can't find the topic in Help. Thanks.

What mail program are you using?  If it is the Mail program included with OS X.. try this:  Close the mailbox drawer. Next drag the entire mail window to the right so that the right side of the window cannot be seen  (it is off the right side of the screen).  Now goto the "View"  menu at the top of the screen and choose "show drawer".  It should appear on the left side this time.

In Mail, select View ->Hide Drawer. This makes that panel retract. Then move the Mail window over to the right so there is more empty space to the left. Then select View ->Show Drawer. This will make that panel pop out again, but this time on the left, where there's more room.

Thanks to the two board members who responded to my request for help with Mail. I'm pretty sure their responses were not documented in Mail help. Once again this forum comes to the aid of a befudled user.

Glad to help.

You may be right about the lack of documentation.  I don't really know.. I usually just play around and use intuition to try and figure those things out myself.  I didn't know the answer to your question when I read it... So I went into mail and poked around a little bit and made a guess.  I then tested my theory and posted the results to you.  I am guessing that Andrew made the same discovery at some point as well.  Unles it is documented somewhere?

Yes, that's how I figured this out when I started using OS X Mail. But this question made me curious, so I searched for Drawer in the help viewer, and found this:

Choosing how mailboxes are displayed
To change which side of the window the mailbox drawer is attached to, drag a message to the side where you want it to appear.

I tried this and it works easier than my solution. You never know what's hidden in the help files....

The only caveat being that you have to have enough room on your display for the drawer on the chosen side! It won't display on the other side if there isn't enough room for it to be entirely visible, apparently. (having just tried it).

...Unless the mail window is so wide that there isn't room for the drawer on either side. Then you can use Apples drag-a-message technique to display the drawer running off the edge of the screen to either side. Why anyone would want to do this, though....
