Cant download PDF files
« on: April 06, 2003, 08:48:00 AM »
iMac, OS9.1, 233mz, 160MB memory.

I tried to download 'maintenance instruction' from Macinstruct and got these messages:

An internal error has occurred
An error occurred while loading the pluugin 'PDF Viewer' Error 1 of 2. An attept to load 'Accessing URL: http://www.macinstruct.com/contest/mainten...maintenance,PDF failed.

While I'm at it, I may as well ask why I don't seem to have AppleWorks on my computer.

Fiona, not sure exactly what is happening here, but you might find some useful info here:

http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html

Can you download any PDF's or do you always get that error? If so, you could simply trash all your existing Acrobat Reader files and reinstall, following the directions at the link above. BTW, the link you provided has a comma in it (just before the "pdf") which should be a period. However, assuming that you are clicking on the link on the maintenance page at MacInstruct, rather than trying to hand enter the URL, this is probably unrelated to the issue at hand.

Also, do you have the most recent version of Acrobat Reader? I've run into a few situations with people who didn't have the most recent version encountering errors, if the PDF was generated by the most recent version of Acrobat (full version). The most recent version of Reader is 5.05.

As to AppleWorks - it tends to install itself OUTSIDE the Applications folder for some unknown reason - are you sure it's not there? Did you have it before or have you never had it? Have you looked for it with Sherlock? Do you have the original install disks for the iMac? (though given its age, it may have a pre-Appleworks 6 version).

Paddy:  I've been having that problem for a while with attempted downloading of all PDFs. I did as you suggested and trashed the old stuff and reinstalled  a newer version, actually Version 5 because I couldn't see anything higher than that. Speaking of seeing      the comma in the URL was copied by hand, and with my ancient vision, I hit the comma instead of the period. When I tried the new version, I got the same error message.

And then along came Kelly. I hit control and click, download linkto disk and up came the maintenance instructions. I have printed it.

Thanks to both of you.

I have to use that method sometimes.

Especially with IE 4.5 in OS 9.x

Right now I'm in Safari in OS 10.2.2

Sometimes that gets confusing.
