IE\'s Download cache and IE Cache.lck??????
« on: April 03, 2003, 08:26:00 PM »
I reported some time ago on a freeze up problem that occurs randomly on my Dual 1 GHz Mac under OS 9.2.2. What happens, especially if I am in IE in Eudora, the system freezes (I can move pointer, but nothing else works).

When I reboot, I find that there are two Rescued Items in the trash - Download Cache and IE Cache.lck. I have Sherlock searched my Mac and found Download Cache in the Explorer Preferences folder. IE Cache.lck is in a temporary items folder under OS 9.2.2 but it is invisible according to Sherlock.

Another clue is that when I use MacWasher to erase caches, etc., It indicatesthat the above two IE caches have up to 50 MB in them!

My question is is the freezeup occuring because the caches are overflowing? Or is it something else? Should I iccrease my IE memory which is currently at 75 MB 75 MB?

Any suggestions that anyone has on what the source of and/orthe cure for the freezeup would be greatly appreciated.

MamaMoose , I do not have the answer but do have a similar problem on my Beige G3. The difference is...it does it in any program I am using. It seems to happen most often in IE and Outlook Express. I await some of our knowledgeable TS'ers  for answers or suggestions as do you.

Well Mama, you can manually trash the cache in >preferences >advanced. You can add more memory,25mb-40mb which is one reason why it might be freezing on you. Then there’s a free software gadget http://www.macunicorn.com/turbomem/index.htm that may help, or it could be a plug-in overload. It’s trial and error. I tend to lean the way of memory when she freezes though, just habit I guess?

I don't believe that adding more memory to IE will help Mamamoose's situation.  He has already alloted 75 MB's and that is more than enough to run IE.  I used a lot of memory for IE myself in OS 9, but the most was 35 to 40 MB's, and that is considered overkill, even with a lot of plugins, never had a low memory error.

MM, try deleting the IE cache.waf file and rebuilding your desktop for starters.  When you find those files (IE cache.lck and download cache) in your trash can, just delete them.  They get rebuilt everytime you restart IE.

Same for Dolphin, but if your Macs continues to randomly freeze, maybe one of your system preferences got corrupt too from all the freeze ups.  Go ahead and trash these preferences and see if it helps.

Mac OS pref
system pref
finder pref
ASLM pref

Follow this up with a desktop rebuild.

, this took a lot to remember this since I have not had to do it since jumping the fence to OS X last year.

Al,

You are right, again! It is time that I "jumped the fence to OS X". I am  just plain tired of OS 9.... and its foibles. So, wish me luck as I go where no Moose has gone before - Beyond here be Dragons

The IE cache.lck file is a temporary file Explorer uses to keep track of what it has recently placed in the cache, and where in the cache file its internal pointers are. It is normally deleted when you quit IE. Like with all temporary files, if the computer crashes before you quit IE, it ends upin the "Rescued Items" folder.

Your crashes are not caused by IE's cache overflowing; IE uses a fixed-size cache file, which it recycles when it runs out of room.

Rather, you have encountered an incompatibility between IE and Eudora, which is one of the reasons I don't use Eudora.

IE and Eudora both access the system's Internet Preferences file. IE stores its cookies there; Eudora stores God knows what there. Unfortunately, Eudora has a bug which will cause it to overwrite IE's cookies in that file while IE is still using them.

If you log on to a Web site that sets a cookie, then you switch to Eudora and read an HTML email, then switch back to IE and go to a Web site that attempts to access the cookie that was just sent to you, IE will usually crash, bringing down your entire system with it.

What's worse, Eudora will under some circumstances corrupt your Internet preferences file, corrupting or overwriting some or all of your cookies.

Next time you get one of those "freezes" try waiting about 20-30 seconds if you can stand it. I get those as well but most of them resolve themselves and I get full motion after a pause. Everything stops including the clock but the mouse moves. If after 30 seconds it hasn't returned then I force quit IE and restart it. I only have to restart the system maybe once in every 5 or 6 times this happens.

BTW, Eudora has an update just released which may help in this issue.

 Eudora 5.2.1

Kris , my freezes react the same way. 20-30 secs and it unfreezes and works fine. I think  Al , may have a good point. Corrupt preferences!!! I will try what you suggest Al.  Good luck MamaMoose!!!

Most informative, tacit - thanks!
Even if I've largely abandoned IE forever. As for the Cache.waf, for ages I've gone into the preferences and thrown it away "by hand". Whether that's a total waste of time or not, I don't know.

I like the new Eudora version, Kris; it took a long time coming. While I didn't spot whether it tackles this particular problem, the list of fixes was a big one.
