This is a shame. The first one I had worked great. I only got rid of it after I bought a faster one. (I sold it to a friend who says it still works great.) My new one also works great.

Boy, Bill's sure gonna be sad when he sees this. He must have a closet full of them.

Saw Kelly's thread late last night Rob,but kept having some unusual sharp pains all over my body. Needless to say, didn't get much sleep. Think Pertra has something to do with these prodding like pains. <gr>

I'm not to concerned or surprised about Yamaha dropping the line. In a odd sort of way, for saw it coming.

If you think through my thought patterns for a second (minus the spelling), Yamaha has always been a high class manufacture when it comes to hardware. Look at their electronics branch all the way back into the 50s for example. High grade amplifiers, receivers etc.

When the computer world took the front stage,Yamaha needed to get in on the action or be left behind.
So they jumped in but still stayed with higher quality hardware hoping that their other departments in this same field (cds etc) would pull up the slack for balancing incoming revue.
Didn't happen! To much competition. Prices dropping from no-name outfits.
Thus quality dropped like a rock.

As Kellys link stated, they (yamaha) bit the bullet and tried to cut cost yet still keep a higher standard with their new-and-improved F1 burners. TOO LATE.
Even though I've read the F1 is a great machine ... didn't fly.
Why should Joe blow off the street pay twice or three times the amount when he/she could get a johnny saw buck burner from someones garage in Philadelphia <gr> which will do the basics.?. Face it,most folks just want to make copies of whatever. Only a small percentage want or care about top notch quality cds, dvds etc. Those shoot for the much higher machines. Can you see the 'void' here? No money to be made.
I've a strong feeling that Lacie and perhaps lite-on might be following suit (if not already) right behind Yamaha.

Concerned. Well yes.
I've a yamaha receiver that is at least twenty five years old. I pulled it out of the box the other day and hooked it up. STILL works great! Way out dated but....

You bet I grabbed a .... errr .... few yamaha burners when the price was right Rob.
Fact is I have a lead on another new one and this weekend might pick it up.

Figure by the time they bite the dust,I'll be ant food any ways or cds will be out dated.
Besides, I can always sell them down the road.

Besides two: I've 6 - one hundred verbatim spindles+ to use up.

Care to ask how many eight tracks I had at one time.
OR how many antilog cells phones, VCR players.

Bill, I'll bet just to be sure, when VCRs first came out, you grabbed a bunch of beta and VHS models. And I'm also sure you still have them in  that closet.

BTW, you can get all kinds of interesting things at some garages in Philly.

Would you believe I've four active stereo vcrs right now and three sitting in the bull pin .. just in case.    One is a sony that's eight or nine years old and on top of it is last years latest and greatest panasonic. The sony kicks butt.

I posted these links in a different thread earlier which give a bit more insight.

 about the merged company

 hitachi storage

I agree that Yamaha was one of those brands that you knew would be money well-spent. My CDRW is a Yamaha brand internally but in a Smart and Friendly case. Couldn't care less about the exterior but the guts are what counts. They made the mistake of letting other brands carry their innards and took their own name a bit too late. At least Apple can't be accused of letting the clones take away their name.

 Bill, I've got you beat.
Among my 4 VHS VCRs (one not working, plus an additional 8MM VCR) is a GE model that I bought in 1983. It's still working just fine although it sustained a lightning strike a few years after I got it and it did need a repair. Nevertheless, 20 years is pretty good for an electrical component.

Come to think of it, the microwave I purchased that same day is still running, too.

Krissel.
Speaking of garage sales and microwaves.
About five years ago I found a couple of those little camper type microwaves at a garage sale.
Sharp Carousel II. Think they're 700 watts.Maybe less. Bought them both for ten bucks.
Cleaned them up and to this day they both work just fine. Got one on the patio for fast food chomping. The other stashed as an extra. <gr>

The only thing about those older micros is the worry of the door seal not being very secure.

I always turn it on and walk away while it's cooking.
