AppleScript Help?
« on: April 14, 2003, 01:07:00 AM »
About all I've got installed on the Pismo that's M$ is a free PowerPoint Slideshow Viewer program... everytime I use it I get 3 files/folders in my system>preferences folder, the program claims they are "support" files but I don't see why I'd want to have these around and what role they place... I delete them and next time I use the Viewer they come back. I write instructions to dump these sort of annoyances on booting the computer into Autoexec.bat on Windows, I'm wondering if anything similar can be done with AppeScript? These are the files:

MS Internet Cache (folder contains file "cache.waf" of 5mb)
Microsoft Office Settings (file)
Office Registration Cache (file)

I don't have IE installed at all...

That's more than enough to cause these files to be created, apparently!

Seriously, you may have some other stuuf that you may have forgot. Have you ever had Internet Explorer installed? It (and probably some other M$ tsuff) have a 'program' that scanns for 'required' items and re-creates them if they are not installed. So, until you find that 'Repair' program, AS may not be enough to keep them away from you disk.

No, Jim... I've never had IE on this machine, when I install an OS I generally skip all the Internet stuff so as not to get IE and then install the browsers versions and types etc that I prefer myself.

The installer for the PowerPoint Slideshow Viewer has a "first-run" app with it that dumps about 6 items in the extensions folder along with the 3 items I mentioned in the preferences folder the first time you run the Viewer... I can see where the first 6 are needed but the last 3 are just annoyances that you can trash and get recreated next time you run the Viewer. The extensions, if you remove any... you have to run the "first-run" app again.

It's typical of M$ to dump unecessary things all over the place... more of an annoyance than anything else, but it would be nice to just click on something or set it to dump those items when the Viewer quits... don't see why I need an IE cache.

After some sleuthing and watching, these files are only created by running the PP Viewer...

I just love M$... about as much as banging my head into the wall!
