Error 11
« on: April 14, 2003, 10:42:00 AM »
Over the weekend I tried to install some new RAM in my beige G3. Evidently I got the wrong type because nothing happened. The system would not even boot. So I replaced the old RAM and now I'm getting an error 11 message. I've reseated the RAM, switched them around in the slots and still I get this error 11. I sure hope I haven't messed up a connector on the motherboard or zapped one or more of the RAM chips. Could putting in the wrong type of RAM chips have destroyed something?

Can I get some help here?

Steve. I would not think bad RAM would hurt it.

It just wouldn't work well if at all.

There is the possibility you damaged something with static shock.

Error 11 seems to include a lot of possibilities.

Try a Base or All Setting to check for Extension Conflicts.

When do you get the Type 11 error? On startup? When you run programs?

It occurs on startup. I haven't tried booting from something other than the hhard drive yet.

Well last night I disconnected everything, unplugged all but 1 RAM board and started. It booted OK. I then went to absolutely minimum extensions and control panels and started adding things back. Everything went fine until I got to the 3rd RAM connector. So it looks like I may have a bad connector on the motherboard. Putting any RAM in it causes the problem.

Guess I'll see if I can get another motherboard cheap. Thnx to tacit and kelly.

Steve -

if that's the only malfunction, it seems to me it would be less expensive to simply stop using that third (apparently damaged) RAM socket and live with two.

Can you buy a replacement mobo for less than the cost of two  256 MB or 512 MB RAM modules (or one of each)?

My beige G3 runs awfully well on 784 MB RAM and that cost about $75 (3 x 256MB) not too long ago.

kbear,

I've been pricing modules and mobos on ebay. Looks like an empty mobo is going for about the price of two 256Mb modules. So I'll probably get the RAM and work with that for a while then if I need more RAM I'll look into getting a motherboard.

You mentioned 512 Mb. From everything I've read, a 256 Mb module is the largest the beige G3 memory manager can handle. Do you have different information?

Nope.

I just assumed.

I remember several earlier models whose published specs were written at a time when larger memory modules were not available, yet it turned out that they worked just fine with the larger modules.

Anybunny else know from firsthand experience (or a definitive source) whether a 512 MB memory module will work in a beige G3?

Sorry guys, beige G3's will not see 512 MB modules.  It will be seen as half that.  256 MB modules is where it tops out.
