Beige G3 1GHz G4 Upgrade
« on: April 15, 2003, 09:18:00 AM »
Seems a little expensive to me. $699.95

"Sonnet Technologies has announced a 1.0GHz G4 version of its Encore/ZIF product, a processor upgrade aimed at beige Power Mac G3 models. The new upgrade will be shipping soon, according to the company."

"The Encore/ZIF upgrade is, as the name implies, aimed at beige Power Mac G3 systems, whose motherboards are equipped with Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) processor sockets. Sonnet said that it has plans to introduce new speeds and further compatibility with so-called "blue and white" Power Mac G3 and "Yikes" PCI motherboard-equipped Power Mac G4s in the coming weeks."

IAWK - $700 seems crazy to spend on a beige G3! Far better at that point to save a few more dollars and invest in either a used G4 or a new iMac or eMac. The various limitations inherent in the G3 (bus speed, expandability etc.) cannot be magically solved by putting in a new processor.

Last week, someone offered a buy-it-now deal on eBay on a Quicksilver 1 GHz DP, with 1.5GB of RAM and a Superdrive for $1150 (wish I'd seen that listing - good track record seller too!) - so the deals are there if you're patient - MUCH better deals than spending $700 on a 5 or 6 year old Mac.

Any good things to say about Sonnet tech support? I tried their 7200 upgrade. I had random freezes and tech support said their were Quicktime issues with the card. I'm anxious to upgrade my 333 iMac, but leery of Sonnet....

Initially had a lot of trouble with my Sonnet G4 700 upgrade for my 9600. Spent a week of Hell swapping in/out 12 RAM sticks, PCI cards, etc.
Was about to give up but sent a last ditch email to Sonnet support. Received a message from Neal who advised removing the original TwinTurbo video card as he knew there was a conflict but it wasn't yet listed on the Sonnet site.

Bingo, once that card was removed the upgrade ran fine. Few stalls ocassionally but otherwise OK.
So, thanks to Neal they kept a customer.

Get a new computer, save the 700.00 and keep adding to it until you have 1200-1400 saved up and invest in a G4.  Upgraging a G3 beige is not worth it.
