I don't use AOL myself but I have a friend that just received a new baby girl to the family and wanted to send out pictures of his beautiful new addition. Needless to say when he sent pictures of his most treasured new addition to AOL members they couldn't see them.

Does anyone know what it takes to see a picture in AOL?

AOL seems to have it's own way of doing things.

A couple of friends of mine are on AOL too, & they are using Kodak's free software called "EasyShare".

Go to Kodak's web page & look for "EasyShare".

It does look as tho there are special instructions for AOL people to download but I know my friends had no pblms getting it & send great pictures via e-mail with it.

You do NOT have to have a Kodak camera to use it. Neither one of them do.

I use AOL, and Ireceive attachments, including pictures, from many clients using all sorts of email programs and operating systems with noproblem.

What problem was your friend having? What format were the pictures? What email program does he use? What problems did the AOL recipients have? AOL works just fine with attachments and pictures; my wife receives pictures of her neice and nephew on her AOL account daily!

He sends pictures from his iPhoto program via Mail in Jaguar. I assume they are JPEGs captured from his Canon PowerShot S30 camera.

I think I will have him get on this thread and continue from here.

I will take it from here... I have been sending phots thru IPhoto... and most people have been able to open up the pics... but a few friends have not... and they all seem to be on AOL... however until recently I was on AOL and I never had trouble opening up JPEG files from others... thanks for the help

i'm on aol, hmm i know they gotta have an extension to open the files like jpg or gif. eitherelse it might just be the aol acting up which it does sometimes.

Mail encodes attachments using a system called "AppleDouble." That means, when you send a file using Mail, it breaks the attachment into TWO files (one that contains the actual picture and one that contains the special Macintosh information like the icon) and sends both files as two diffent attachments.

This confuses some mail readers, like AOL.

You can still receive the picture using AOL. You have to download the file attachment, and then run a program that can decode the attachment. On the Mac, the programs "Decoder" and "YA-Decoder" can decode it and give you back the picture. On the PC, many programs exist to get the file nback; look for "MIME decoder" on shareware.com or download.com.

I've used a work around, with my AOL friends.

Whereas we normally attach the jpegs, I've copied the pictures and pasted them into the email for my AOL buds.

Upon relooking at it, I find that I can no longer paste a picture into the mail window (using NS 7) but instead must "insert" the pic into the mail window.

YMMV.
