Problems With An iMac (2 of them)

We have an iMac 500 (I mentioned it before) it didn't work out at our business so we brought it home & I upgraded it from 10.0.3 to 10.1, OS X gets stuck around directories i think, and now we can't get it to boot again in OS 9.2, it boots from a disk, but usually dosen't recognize having a Hard Drive.  When It does it asks if we want to initialize it.

Help!!!!

Also, I was wondering if there is a way to make computers in OS 9.2 and 8.1 (2 different computers) require a password to wake up from sleep, we need one, we have "sequirity problems at our feed mill.

BTW: last week we planted 25 acres of oats    , and one of our tractors- it took some doing to get it out of the mud!

Have you tried to use a software such as DiskWarrior to see why the HD doesn't seem to mount at times?

I don't think we have it- did it come with any mac computers?

I'll have to ask my friend, he's likely to have it.

Why would OS X not get past "Creating Directory Services"?

Regarding the security issue, one (but certainly not the only) approach is to use a screen saver such as Darkside http://www.poubelle.com/DarkSide.html.

It is a very small & highly rated app. (for Classic only) that requires a password after the system is in a sleep mode. On the downside, it is not truly robust from a security aspect, e.g., one may bypass the app. by restarting with the extensions off. But unless one is Mac savvy, this may be fine enough.

I was going through some old archive folders I had and found a security password protected app called Sesame.
Played around with it some. It has the option for not allowing a reboot to by pass the extensions in OS 9xx. Found that it is still on a download website here.

How good is it.?.
My cat can get passed it .. if she knew how to spell her name that is. <gr>

Pendragon- Darkside works great!!  

The security problem is a person (barely PC literate, defintely not Mac literate) trying o figure out how to screw up the computer.  This ought to stump him.  I have no idea why, he's just plain annoying, not exactly a friend.

Ow well, least he dosen't work for us.

Peter, Glad to hear that Darkside is working out. While I have not heard of problems associated with that app., but as with any screen saver, it may be wise, at least for a few weeks, to stay alert for conflicts, etc.
