For one. If you're booted into OS 9 you'll see a Hard Drive icon for each Partition.

If you have more than one Hard Drive they each have an icon.

In OS X when you go to Computer you'll see multiple icons..

There's no reason you'd have a Partitioned Hard Drive unless you did it.

Your question is a little unclear.  However, if yor computer is set up as it was from the factory, the Hard drive is not partitioned.  You would have to do this yourself... if you choose to do it at all.

From the factory, your Computer would have come with a single partition with both OS X.2.3 (or whatever version of OS x was current at that time)  And OS9.2.2.  By default, the computer would boot into OS X and use the OS 9.2.2 installation fo Classic.  You can, however, change it to actually boot into OS 9.2.2 by going to the Systgem preferences and choosing "Startup Disk".  Choose the OS 9.2.2 system folder, reboot and you will be in OS 9.
Hope this helps a little

Steve

Thank you gentlemen,
I tend to think (hush my mouth) PC in that you cannot have two OS's on the  one drive. It would appear (unless you tell me different) that the Mac HDD is not partitioned but in a way it is in that the partitions are in actual fact two completely different and independant system folders.
Tell me that I am getting there!
George.

Hi George,

You are correct in up to a certain extent.  Yes, it seems by what you are telling us that you have not partitioned your hard drive.  But because the new Mac configuration allows you to dual boot two OS's simultaniously does not mean that your drive is partitioned, just that OS X allows dual booted OS's for compatability.

Partitioning is a hardware configuration where you would take a hard drive and split it into how many other volumes you want.  Each volume after partitioning acts just like a different hard drive.

Yup, you're getting there...
