OT: BEWARE..what happened to me last night
« on: May 08, 2003, 12:00:00 AM »
I'm afraid this story is a reflection of our times, both scary and sad.

Many of you know that I am up late into the wee hours of the morning nearly every night since retiring. I do my best thinking and inspiration comes easier. Snuffy knows what it's like to get into a creative mood and not being able to quit without completion.
Some of you also know that I try to keep fit by a routine of  exercise including 2-3 miles daily on the treadmill.

So, to set the scene...it's 2:15 AM yesterday (Wednesday), I've put the computer to sleep to walk a mile on the treadmill which is in my studio facing two 4x4 foot windows that look out onto a very private yard surrounded by wooded areas. I live at the end of a dead end street and the nearest house in that direction is about 200 feet away through the woods, barely visible even in winter. The bottom edge of the windows is at least 6 feet off the ground as the studio sits high on the foundation.

I have a shelf that I made that slips over the treadmill control panel so that I can read while walking with a drafting light that bends over the reading material. Sometimes I get quite warm while walking so I may remove my shirt at times but no more, and yes, I always wear undergarments especially when exercising.

About one mile into my walk, while reading, I noticed some sort of movement or reflection in the window in front of me. A lot of things can go through your mind in a split second. First I thought it might be my own reflection, then perhaps a deer, but no, it was up high and close to the window.

Then I saw him.

There was a man, with a ski cap, folded up, holding a camera up to his face about a foot from the window about to take my picture!

As I said , a lot of things go through your mind.... am I just imagining it? It just can't be a person cause they would have to be nine feet tall to be at my level. How could this be?
Only a half second passed before I went through all the options and had to admit, yes, this is really happening.

I immediately grabbed the light hanging over my reading material and flipped it up, aiming it into his face. Realizing he was discovered he ducked down, unfortunately holding the camera still in front of his face, and turned, grabbing something and ran off into the darkness. It was then that I saw he had an aluminum stepladder with him!
That's how he managed to be at such a height.

I jumped off the treadmill and ran to my bedroom to call the police, barely able to speak with my heart pounding like crazy. It took what seemed like forever for the police to arrive but they came in force, three cars. They thoroughly walked my property and the surrounding streets. They found a pair of ski gloves with fingertips cut off on the lawn which they bagged up and took with them and ran the plates on a suspicious car that was on a back street. After about 45 minutes they had pretty much done all they could do and left.
Needless to say, I didn't sleep much last night.

I spent most of today working on making curtains for those windows, resetting a spotlight that just wasn't doing it's job and alerting my neighbors. I'm going out tomorrow to get another spotlight to install . One corner of the house isn't quite covered.

I've lived in this house for 30 years come June and always felt very secure and never imagined my very private yard would be violated. This is a highly upscale town with median home prices last year at $640,000 (mine of course is one of those that drags down the statistic). But it just serves to give notice that you aren't secure anywhere. It was obvious that this individual has been stalking me for some time to know that this was my routine, that I would be exercising at that hour, and to bring a camera and his own ladder!!!

Sorry this is so long, just needed to get it out. My folks are worried of course but I refuse to live in fear. I'm hoping his being "caught" in the act is enough to discourage any further attempts to invade my life.

Thanks for listening.

I can certainly understand your concerns, this is not something to dismiss. Thankfully all he wanted were pictures, but that does not minimize the violation by any means.

Glad you're okay.

Wow! That's scary!

I'm a 50 something year old male who lives in a second floor condo. That story still gives me the creeps.

I know that from the street my place looks like a fish bowl at night, unless the curtains are drawn and that's the way I keep it.

Like kps said... I'm glad you're okay, Kris!

Well Kris, if you were my, daughter, sister, wife, mother, I would insist that you get a gun. Or if not, at least a large dog, maybe two, and there would be a few ugly guys in hairy outfits watching your back. Yes I’m the one who is going to try to scare the sh.. out of you, why? Because I don’t care that he was taking pictures, I care what he was going to do with them, who might get them, and if or when he goes to jail, who he tells, and what happens next? Your a mark, and you have to adjust your thinking. You have to think beyond the incident. That is extreme behavior for a guy to just take pictures of a dressed lady on treadmill. OK, if your an celebrity, or if he had mistaken you for one it makes sense, but if not you’ve not answered the real questions, and assuming he has had his fill is not the smart conclusion at this point.

Could someone have put him up to this? Any Strange Phone Calls? Enemies? Secret Admirers, or someone who can’t take NO for an answer?

Lights will do nothing but help him take better pictures, maybe you can gets a few  cameras and takes some pictures of your own?

Your going to feel like you lost your home for a while, and the spaces between thoughts will be occupied with this until you feel secure. Assume the worse Kris, prepare as if he and his friends are desperate for pictures of you, or whatever. Taking this lightly is never, never, the right thing to do.

Kris:

That would unnerve anyone.

May I make a suggestion please. Get heat sensor activated flood lights on all sides of your house and deadbolt locks on all your exterior doors.

I hired a firm of electricians to put them on all four sides of our house. The owner of the firm said, "Why all sides? Most people only get them at the rear." I told him I have windows on all four sides and I want intruders on my property to have the shock of being siddenly lit up regardless of the direction from which they approach our house.

The original installation was motion sensor activated, but one weakness was that flying objects such as insects, snowflakes etc would turn on the lights. One unit had to be replaced so we installed one with heat sensor activation - much better - only comes on when a warm-blooded creature comes into range. You can adjust the range up to 50 feet and the amount of time the lights stay on. In case of an emergent situation you can turn them all on by a simple up/down flick of an interior switch if you wish to.

An interesting side note - when I went in to the electricians to pay the bill, the owner told me that after talking to me and thinking about it, he sent his men out to put lights on the other three sides of his house!

I remember years ago, a security pro saying to me, "A nine foot fence provides no security from a guy with a twelve foot ladder!"

These are unsettling times, and yet I know people who still never lock their house when they go to bed!

Count me in!

It's a sad commentary on our times when we are forced to virtually imprison ourselves in order to feel secure in our own homes. I'm sure most of us can remember better times, times when we didn't lock our doors, when we or our kids ran free without concern, the bad guys got put in jail and perverts got an 'attitude adjustment'.

So glad you are OK except for emotional trauma which will hopefully go away with time. But, please heed sandboxes warning. We don't want our krissel telling us of followup incidents by this creep.

Krissel,

I'm sorry to hear about it. I hope they find the guy.

I've had things stolen from my back yard and......well, I wish these thing never happened!

I think the steps you've taken seem reasonable. I put motion detector lights outside.

Kris,
Part of me rebels against the need to hide behind a blizzard of security measures, but the rest of me knows these cowardly creeps exist everywhere.

Take care; sure glad you are okay.

I didn't like the idea of putting security measures into affect either. I had 3 of my Bonsai trees stolen in the Fall of 2000.

I did nothing until I had more stolen in the Spring of 2002. That's when I put the lights up. I wanted to put a camera in too but i couldn't afford it.

Sorry about your confrontation with the morally backrupt unfortunate, Kris. Too bad some are selfish and weak and don't mind making your world less than it should be.

Everyone still has the primitive "lizard brain" inside. Most civilized and intelligent people have it under control.

Society will eventually deal with this individual.

I like my new QuickSilver but the speaker looks for all the world like a spy camera lens.

I think this kind of thing wiil only get worse. The kids of today are undisciplined, and out of control. For example, the college I attend, Michigan Tech University, was one of the safest up to this year. Previously an average of 1 theft per year was reported with no rapes, murders, etc. The most illegal activity was underage drinking.

Now the new batch of freshman came up this year and ruined this reputation. This year, their have been many (i.e. 30 plus) laptops, playstations, and other techincal gadgets stolen. My neighbor across the hall had his wireless router stolen, while he was sleeping in his room. Various signs have been stolen from the outside of my door. Even things have been BURNED while on my door!

On weekends, my roomate and I normally stay up pretty late. We have caught people stealing things from the outside of other people doors, and have heard our doornob being rustled, to see if it was unlocked.

Now, we lock out door, shut our curtain, and sleep a little less hard at night. In contrast, last year our door was ALWAYS unlocked, many times standing wide open with nobody in the room, and we slept well at night.

Some people just suck.
