Looking for some NS 7.0.1 expertise
« on: February 02, 2003, 12:38:00 PM »
Can't find an effective answer in the NS Manual, which I purchased.

I've asked this before, but nothing seems to work.

The Problem:

During my original NS 7.0.1 install, two mail  accounts were established. I have not the slightest idea why.

One is named "for" my e-address; the second is in my organization's name (which was put on the Mac when I set-up Jaguar). I want to get rid of the duplication.

NS has only one profile - - mine.

Previous Unsuccessful "Solutions":

Checking the Mail/Accounts preferences offers the chance to make the account with my e-address the default. Fine, however it does not allow the second, and really irrelevant, account to be deleted.

Perhaps not incidentally, the second account is "described" as a special account that has no identities associated with it. Oh, thanks! What's that all about and how can I trash the whole account?

Huh?

PS: to add to the puzzle, SENT mail ends up (automatically) filed in the  "irrelevant" account.

Go figure!!

Yes, that really is a problem, and it took a lot to figure out for me, but here goes,
select your Mail & Newsgroups, when that window opens select Netscape Mail, in my case its the third one down, when that opens select View settings for this account, and it is here you can select or reassign that account!
Hope that is the info you needed!!

David:

I may not be tracking . . . exactly . . . that path

Here’s the one I see and have been following:

WINDOW-->MAIL and NEWSGROUP-->EDIT-->MAIL and NEWSGROUPS ACCOUNT SETTINGS

At which point both mail accounts are listed on the left. Choosing the “good” account reveals three options. One for ADD, another for setting AS DEFAULT, and a third for REMOVE ACCOUNT. However, when I open the “bad/irrelevant” account, only the ADD option is visible.

Is that what you’re referring to?

Does your NS describe “your” irrelevant account as  “Special” and without “identities”.

I’m still stuck, I fear.

Thanks for writing

Thank God I did not have that problem! When I saw the extra mail box besides my wife's and mine, that’s what I did, deleted it, and all has been well since! Sorry I was not any help, if I was in your shoes I'd remove that Netscape folder (mine are in a Mozilla folder) and start over again, but keep the profile folder and move your mail boxes, bookmarks, and cookies back later, when you start Netscape you will have to go through the registration process again (I hit the cancel button), of course the bookmarks and such are gone, but quit the program and replace the things you saved from your old folder you should be up and running again, but I'd start with new pref's, in OSX there’s more you can move into the new profiles, what I've found fun is where they hide the user folder in 9 and below now, but what ever makes their day!
I don't use Netscape mail in my B/W, there I still use Eudora (what-the-hay it's what I'm use to), but on my 7500 I use it just to have the convenience of e-mail, but either way I like the tab feature of Netscape!

David:

Thanks.

You described what Plan B was going to be. It will be easy, I suspect, if I meerely save my address book and bookmarks and trash everything else.

I did that several times with earlier NS versions, w/o incident. I assume the Manual will indicate if there are any other differences in 7.0.1.

Why do I have this feeling that you and I are the only mortals in the galaxy that 1) discovered this glitch and 2) tried to do anything about it?
