New Board...growing pains!!!
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:10:16 AM »
I have noticed that many...(Kelly's was the first to catch my eye) members avatars are not showing...!

Is this just a growing pain of the new software or do they have them turned OFF???

BTW...I love how some of the upgraded software features work...eg BOLDCOLOR smile.gif  clap.gif

WOW.gif  It's good to be back - and the board looks so different.

They didn't accept my password yesterday but today it came through loud and clear.

thanx.gif   for all of your work to make this site even better than it was before.

You have a sharp eye, Roy. I wasn't paying attention to that.

Maybe it has something to do with custom vs. 'smorgasbord' avatars.

Let's see...

The previous board was slow as molasses compared to other forums. This new version is as
slow as wet cement, due no doubt to "growing pains". For your information I measured the
time to open the Posts page and also the time to open a Topic, with various browsers.
Here are the results:

I hope that by the time our growing pains are over our new board will be as fast as some other forums. Still we must thank our leaders to have such a grand outlook for our future. A hell of a good job is being done.

I am confused.
Does this mean TechSurvivors has not Survived?
I really liked it the way it was.

Maybe some of the people who have avatars can share the method by which they were established with those who haven't got them anymore!  This is after everything else is working.  I feel naked without one but if I can stand to run around naked then you'll all have to bare with me!

The lucky one's were those who have custom avatars stored somewhere else addressable as a URL; this I know.  I just don't have a space, either in Flick'r or my Yahoo photos where and individual photo can be addressed by a permanent URL.  I have a webpage, dedicated to my father's memory, and I suppose I could figure out how to link a one picture page to that!  I'm a hardware technician not a webwacker! wallbash.gif

Welcome back, mister k!!!

The admins on this board had to upgrade the board software because of security reasons. The forum was under attack by vermin that would put javascript macros on the pages and force advertising and pop-up and pop-under pages to appear against the admins wishes.

The board software still needs plenty of tweaking to get it up and running faster but IPB and the admins are working on it as posted in other threads.

Now the forums should be safe again. *Phew*   whew.gif  sweatingbullets.gif

I simply had to reassign the link to my image that is hosted on my iDisk.

Flickr is free, why not use it to host your avatar? Same as photobucket and other free image hosting places...

This is really great, its a nice new look.  Thank you ALL for working on this!
It is quite slow here too, but I dont think that will last, its just so new.

I did notice that way down in the right bottom corner, the time and date is given.  The date is OK, the time I think is Pacific time, but the minutes are off.

Will you artists be able to create banners?

Anyway, Thank you all for this, its indeed nice.

MHC, thanks for explaining the need for the change. I realized that katscan came aboard after the problems we had with the attacks, and was getting ready to post the reason. I do expect that the banners will soon return! smile.gif

katscan, I don't think the speed (or lack thereof) is a browser issue. The work on the upgrade is not complete, and there is still work being done, including getting the speed issue resolved.

I tried Flick'r (now owned by Yahoo as well) today and couldn't get it to show me a link for a single picture to put into the place in the avatar profile.  I'm not in a hurry; I want the board fast before I worry about my avatar.  I'll read up on Flick'r.  Thanks!

I guess I've been lucky in that I never saw any pop-ups or whatever on my PC's or my MAC's with the old software.   smile.gif

Just testing if this will work...

It does!!!!

Ok how to do this with Flickr, gunug... You need to isolate the picture you want in another window. Click on your avatar that is hosted there so it goes in a window by itself. This won't really isolate your picture with an URL you can use yet. You need to right-click (or Option-click) on the image and ask for "Open image in new window". This will give you a workable URL. Flickr will add some stuff like "?v=0" at the end of your image's URL. Just delete that till you get the right file format like ".jpg" or ".gif" or whatever file format your avatar is saved as.

My example is this URL I got: http://static.flickr.com/35/111647748_e31c687855.jpg?v=0

So I delete the "?v=0" and the image tag becomes "http://static.flickr.com/35/111647748_e31c687855.jpg" and that works fine! smile.gif

Hi Gunug, I never saw any of the problems either. Thank goodness. I dont know why.

I will work on my avitar later, I should change it, as our dear YellowLab is no longer on Earth,,,,,,,,,

I use Flickr for my blog photos, Flickr is really great.
I do use Pbase or .mac for most other things, will have to see if it works with them.
Thank you all for this info, I will have to work on it later.

I do have a bad email issue that I need help with, never encountered anything like it before, its rather awful for a Mac user. It is a PC problem, but it seems to have hit a few people using our cable ISP,,,,,But I will wait until we are up and running full speed before I ask for help with it.

Jane

If you've got a web page, you got space on that server. That's all you need—a place to store the image. For you web page, you probably have some images as well as the html files. Just put the avatar image in with all the other images and use the Profile prefs area at TS to insert the url [http://www.yourSitesName/YourAvatar.jpg] Or, if the images are in a folder at your web space, throw in the name of the folder just before the name of the image name. Url's are almost exactly like path names to your OS X stuff; "yourHardDrive/UserX/Documents/Images/YourAvatar.gif"
