To TV, or not TV
« on: May 23, 2006, 06:06:57 PM »
I think i posted this question before but could not find it in the search. Anyway, now i'm ready to buy.
What would be a good device to use to watch TV on my new (but not intel-based) iMac? i would want it to also be able to import video.
And in an only vaguely related subject, how is video converted to wmv and vice versa? Thanks!

I've got the Miglia Mini for digital terrestrial TV - uses the same software as the Eye TV. Excellent gadget; you can set it to record TV shows, even set it to wake the computer to do so. Needs a decent signal though. Little 'stick' aerial (antenna) didn't work for me. Also use FREE MPEG Streamclip for converting radio and TV shows to CD and DVD

Curious as to why you'd want to use a Windoze format, instead of a better-looking Quicktime format?

hingyfan , I have been considering EyeTV myself. I'd be interested in how it works for you. Please let us know.

Will my OS9 method still work?
I have a VCR connected to my beige G3, which has an ATI video card in it.
The tuner is in the VCR, of course. The video player is from ATI.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Further to my earlier post.... a screen grab of EyeTV running on iMac G5 desktop

Larger version, for those of you on broadband, here

Miglia comes with a "real" remote as well as the on-screen version and guess the EyeTV model does too.

Screengrab showing MPEG Streamclip "in action" with conversion menu:

Again, larger version here

If the rumours mentioned in the July issue of MacWorld are anything to go by, Apple are about to include that facility in one of their next models.

Gregg - Until the FCC forces everyone into the thrilling world of Digital Television your Beige based tuner should work; as should the TV/FM tuner in my 6500/255.  I suppose when it comes down to it someone might sell you a digital tuner that will output a plain old analog signal you can cable into anything (I'll probably go this route  although a PCI card based tuner for a PC (or a MAC!) or maybe that USB digital thing might work in my G4 (although I doubt it).
