Trying to free space on my internal drives to make some back up...

Don't understand why copying to internal (ata drives) is ok and failed when it's whith my second firewire where i have a lot of room...?

The problem firewire disk is an IBM Deskstar, would a formating be ok or is it really dead?

If it is, what would be the "safer" disk to replace it ?

It's not an IBM Deskstar DTLA series...i only read model IC 35L120AVVAO7-O ata/ide

My back up drive is also a Deskstar but made by Hitachi...

Could back up almost all the drive whith many reboots, it works when i shut it down a moment than powered it first , than the G4. Copying some folders is ok but after a moment copying another folder takes an enormous time , so i must reboot and repet the process.

So can i used it reformated it or put it to the trash?

You need to know if it's the Drive or the Enclosure.

Have you determined that?

If you have all your Data, Reformat it and see how it is.

Don't know how much I'd trust it though.

What I did in a similar situation...

SuperDuper or CarbonCopy clone the internal boot drive to the larger (working)
external...
Shut down and replace your small internal with the larger drive from the external case...
Boot "puter and try to back-up to the (now) larger internal.

Unless, of course you're on a laptop.

I think it's the drive cause i exchange enclosure whith the second firewire disk that seems to work in it's new home...

I'll try to reformat the problem one and see...
if I must buy another one which one do you suggest?

I'm no expert on drives but I have all Maxtor ATA EIDE (5).

200G internal (boot 10.4.6 and Docs)2 partitions
60G internal (10.2.8, 10.4.6 again)
80G external (backup Docs) USB 2.0
40G external (backup system again...I'm paranoid) Firewire
and a 40G internal (unconnected with 10.2.8 that I've had to connect and boot with on occasion (paranoid but justified apparently)

I've never really had a problem with any of these drives...just my own stupidity.

But I'm covered just in case.

I'm gonna look for a maxtor...

For the Deskstar, at boot up got an alert window to initialize the disk but the initialisation failed...
Apple system info shows it .... I got "disc control ice" for formating but can't see it in the disks window

Is there another formating software for firewire disks..?

IMO, Western Digital and Seagate drives are superior to Maxtor.

I've personally seen several Maxtor drives fail over the years.

I know that others have had different experiences.

Your mileage may vary.

After the initiaizing failed .... the funeral of the "Deathstar".....

Does all the disks fits and works in the enclosure or must i look for something special?

Is there something better for formating firewire than " Disk control ice " ?

All drives fail and I'm certainly no expert (or even very aware of my surroundings most of the time). I figure a 5400RPM should last longer in any model drive and it's financially important to me not to lose any data and I replace a drive at a best-guess end of it's life than wait for the funeral. Knock-on-wood I've been very lucky.

...and backup to a ridiculous extent.

You'll want an ATA Drive. Sometimes called a P/ATA.

Don't get an SATA.

You need to know if you have Large Drive Support in that Enclosure.

How can i know that...the dead one was 120 gb....are power and disk plug standart in the enclosure?

What firewire formating software do you use ?

Yes. Any drive should fit.

With 9.2.2, i launch Disk utility but it can't see firewire disks....
