PhotoShop Elements 3 - rant re: opening "credits"
« on: June 04, 2006, 10:55:43 AM »
I received a JPEG from George this morning as a result of an earlier iSight-ing.

Wishing  to know if I had received his e-dispatch to me, he (and I) were required to wait . . . and wait . . . and wait, while Adobe made sure I knew everything unnecessary about its application, its couple of dozen patent numbers, its embedded PSE 3.0 bells-and-whistles, in a perplexingly lengthy display (for the 1000th time)! for all I know or care, the parking regulations and cafeteria prices at Corporate might be included in that irritating mess!

Each time PSE opens the same drill repeats . . . and repeats . . . and repeats

I fear I know the answer, but I'm going to ask the question, anyway: Does anyone know of any way to leap over all that nonsense to get PSE up and running, in a reasonably brief period of time? Is there a preference setting, somewhere, that can strip it?

I can't think of another manufacturer that does this . . . or does it as inconveniently/intrusively rant.gif

I don't have elements, but I have the full PS 7. I always assumed that all that stuff is being displayed while Photoshop and its plug ins are being loaded into memory.  I assumed that all the stuff you are seeing is just to keep you busy while the program loads.  If not, yeah I'd like to make it go away as well....

One solution (sort of) is just to keep it running and never close it I suppose.

Agreed, Steve. It's just "too high a price" to pay, for what – in this era of soaring standards of customer service – should be a given! whistling.gif

The only way to fix your problem, Dick, is to get a faster machine.  salute.gif  taped.gif

Not really.... I have a 2.0 GHZ core duo  Macbook Pro, and Photoshop still takes a bit to load.  Of course Rosetta is involved, but if you are buying new.... Unless you get a quad G5 you aren't going to get a faster solution.

It was 'toungue-in-cheek', steve, but PS CS loads very quickly on my dualcore G5 when compared to my 1.2Ghz G4 or my 867Mhz powerbook.

I got the joke.... smile.gif

I was just pointing out that purchasing a new mac for faster photoshop processes is beginning to become somewhat limited due to the intel switch, and Adobe's decision to wait on the Universal binaries.

That's why I grabbed the Dualcore G5 when I did. Never had much faith in Rosetta to handle high CPU usage apps like photoshop or video apps.

It was probably a good decision, although I have been quite impressed with Rossetta in general.  I just launched photoshop 7 on my MBP and it took 5 bounces of the Dock icon before the splash screen appeared. From there it took about 8 sec. to finish loading.

Once running, all menus were very snappy and you would never know you weren't running an Intel native App.  I haven't tried any intensive renderings, but i'm sure there are benchmarks posted somewhere.

Dick -

I guess load speed is relative.  To offer an alternative.  For those times when you are in a hurry, don't want to wait for PSE 3 to load, and don't have something to edit which requires a gazillion PS plug-ins and filters .... you may want to try one of these two alternatives (both of which are pretty darn good ... considering they are free!):

QuickImage - a CM plug-in which will quickly open, as well as edit, most images.  Works with X.2 - X.4.  I find I use more often than Preview to quickly check a graphic.

ToyViewer - a low overhead image editing application which works a little differently than most but, nevertheless, does a pretty good job and quickly.  I find that ToyViewer is the perfect appliction for RAM challenged Macs and .... it's a UB.  It does, however, require X.4.

Easy...

1. Make sure a largish window is open in somw/any other app.
2. Make sure it covers the screen real estate where the Elements splash screen appears.
3. Start up Elements.
4. Switch back to the other program.
5. Go get some coffee.

OR

Try memorizing your registration number while that screen is visible. BTW, all that info is also available in the "Help -> System Info" menu item.

So the answer is . . . Adobe will always make everyone look at all that horsepucky (even at lightspeed for some fortunate "operators") no matter what!

Enlightening thread, anyhow. Thanks, guys.   clap.gif

Special thanks, of course, to ABD for his usual perspicacity, in drafting this advisory!

Or, if you've already had your coffee, I'm sure you could flush out something else  to do while you're waiting....
