My website!   Ta da!

But why the weird Eiffel Towers and Icelandic?  I never put them in!

Any suggestions.

Frances

I suspect you have a disconnect between the font that you used to build the website and the one that is actually available.  Did you have anything in the location where the Eiffel towers are?  I suspect it is something like a hard carriage return being mapped as a foreign character with accent.  Some smart webwhacker will be along in a minute who knows better than I!  Looks very nice otherwise!

A retired professor at the University of Kansas that I used to work with did a video with music in a similar vein with wildflowers of the Dorr Penisula of Wisconsin.  I think a screen saver would be nice too!

I'm not an HTML guru but a few things jump out at me.

First, it's always best to never upload any files that have separate words like for instance:

this is an example.html or look at this.jpg

You should always put underscores in your files like this:

this_is_an_example.html or look_at_this.jpg

In your address you see Reflections%20of%20Shetland.html, the %20 is to compensate for separations between words.

So you should have the reflex that whenever you save an image for example if you absolutely must save it in two words or more always put underscores instead of spaces between those words.

Also, choose a font that will be available on ALL computers like Helvetica, Lucida Grande or Arial and the like.

As for the apostrophe looking funky like that, the correct html for an apostrophe is:

& # 3 9 ; (spaces added between each digit so you can see what makes out the code for the apostrophe)

In case you have to put in accents in your text, here is the HTML code for them. More info here.

And here are normal code for text presentation in your pages.

Å
the Å is created when one holds down the option+shift keys and presses A Å
open your page to sourse mode and remove the Å's then upload again.

the Å seems to be created in the use of "tinyText"

 <div style="height: 0px; line-height: 0px; " class="tinyText">Â </div>
        </div>
        <div style="height: 46px; margin-left: 0px; position: relative; width: 700px; z-index: 0; " id="nav_layer">
          <div style="height: 0px; line-height: 0px; " class="tinyText">Â </div>

You may need to remove this line of code= <div style="height: 0px; line-height: 0px; " class="tinyText">Â </div>
and using this code:
<span class="small_text">PLACING TEXT IN HERE WILL MAKE TEXT SMALLER</span>
-----------------------

the %20 %20 are created when there are spaces in the addresses. wink.gif close_spaces_with_

I had to comment on your typo. It's actually Door County. Yes, it is a peninsula, in fact there's a state park called Peninsula State Park up there.

At least we don't have a Windows County.
Do we, Gary?

Fabulous photos Frances!  smile.gif

As regards the 'Icelandic' you could be on a winner, marketing-wise. As you obviously know, Icelandic is the only current version of old Norse, the language of the Vikings, and has great relevance to the Northern Isles of Scotland.

I am not qualified to comment on the technical side of websites, but I like yours!

I like to go camping at Peninsula, but it is hard to find any openings.... They allow advanced credit card reservations  which means many people reserve space long in advance of their stay and then never show up   mad.gif

Oh well it's a beautiful area.

The problems on your site are not your fault, they are all created by iWeb. ...but you did decide to use that app, didn't you...

Anyway, your font choices are fine, most of the time. Some of the redundant and totally unnecessary inline style has this: "font-family: 'Arial-BoldMT', 'Arial', 'sans-serif';" That asks for "Arial-BoldMT" which is rather a specific font, but it then accepts plain "Arial" which should be on most computers. However, I don't think CSS expects to see 'generic' font families entered with any quotation marks, that could be preventing most browsers from ever using the default sans-serif font installed. In other words, named fonts should have quotation marks surrounding their name, but not sans-serif/serif/fancy/script...

I assume that "’"is an attempt at an apostrophe. I simply use ’ which is readable by any decent browser, and should be available in the text encoding you have set ( charset=UTF-8 ). BTW, get a good typing assistant like Typinator and set up most of these codes so you don't have to remember them. I just type periodapos and Typinator inserts the "’" for me. I use periodquote and I get "“TEXT”"; an opening and closing curly quotation mark ( which usually come in pairs... ). Then I just type or paste in whatever text I want.

BBEdit suggests that the 'Eiffel Towers' ( Å ) should be coded as "&Acirc;". Is a circle what you were trying to print there? Basically the same for "å" ( in line 46, for example ): &acirc; Matter of fact, all the 53 errors point to the use of incorrect symbols/characters...&trad; instead of "tm", &euro; instead of euro keyboard entry...

You've already been advised about using spaces in file names ( here and in other threads ). Just do it. Underlines help you read the file names and keeps all OS's happy. %20, btw, is simply the ASCII code for a 'space', but most OS's don't allow spaces, punctuation and other special characters in file names. Stick with the 26 upper and lowercase letters and numbers and you'll be fine. Believe me, "Reflections_of_Shetland" is easier to read than "Reflections%20of%20Shetland". smile.gif

However, file names are one thing, style names are another. CSS does not allow using underlines in definition names; use absolutely nothing but upper and lower case letters and 0-9 numbers ( there are a few more allowed, but that should be enough for 99.9% of your style names ).

The "tiny text" rule is rather strange:
CODE
.tinyText {
    font-size: 1px;
}
And in true iWeb fashion, an additional, inline style is created saying "height: 0px; line-height: 0px;"! All this should make the text pretty much invisible! But it's hard to tell when some class/ID's are specified but not created in the style sheet. Just not sure what iWeb is trying to do with a "tiny text" rule; what's the purpose... dntknw.gif BTW, "0px" is a waste of two characters, Zero is Zero, no matter what units are being used. When you want to be sure that 2px is used rather than 2em or 2 percent, then you specify the units. But I digress...

It is amazing that Apple can build such a CSS compliant browser and then create a monster like iWeb. wallbash.gif Unless you are a glutton for punishment, don't take those pages anywhere near an HTML or CSS validator! eek2.gif

This might be a good deal for you ( no shipping delays even to the "end-of-the-Earth" addresses! ). And you can usually buy two or more eBooks and get a discount...

This is the answer:-

Server Settings

If a page you create in iWeb and publish to a server other than .Mac contains strange unwanted characters, try setting View > Text Encoding in your browser to UTF-8. If this makes it appear correctly, it means your server is probably forcing browsers to interpret the page as being in Latin-1 encoding. iWeb pages are in UTF-8 encoding so that they can accomodate all languages, not just English and those of W. Europe, and there is no practical way to change this.

Web servers should not be set up this way: They should let the code inside the page determine what encoding the browser is set to. If the people running the server will not change it, you have to set up a separate .htaccess file for your server space to set the encoding right.

I agree Kris, looks good.......

Jim, if I remember correctly search engines, or maybe just Google has a problem with any text smaller than 7px and considers it unreadable and therefore discounts the sites value, assets, and rating. Along the same lines as using white text on a white background, a NoNo nono.gif

iWeb really overwrite it's code. This is my first look at it.  eek2.gif

Well done Frances.

You have to tell me how you did the video captures for the image albums. The quality is remarkably good. Did you use iMovie or another editing programme? Did you also postprocess the captures in an image app like Photoshop?

On the artistic side, pictures are very beautiful and make me want to visit.

I like the rollover effects at the top of the webpages and I think the site looks very handsome and classy. So congrats on a job well done!

A few security things you might want to think about... If you feel comfortable with your pictures that way, it's cool. If you're afraid your pictures might be used/swiped by someone else who comes along and grabs them and uses them, you might want to put a subtle "© Copyright 2006 Frances Taylor" on each of the photos. It won't prevent them from swiping them, mind you, but at least they'll know that they have no right to take your pictures without your consent.

Also on this page I wouldn't put a clickable email address. I would either put an image of the email address so people have to type it in the email address bar or I would put an "AT" instead of "@". Spam robots can pick your email up by spidering their way through your site and you'll be inundated with spam in your email box.
