I'm more than just a Mac geek.
« on: June 11, 2006, 05:39:23 PM »
Since I retired over 5 years ago, I spend more time on my Mac, especially at TS. I also visit other Mac forums & maintain my web sites. But I have other talents.

My wife & I have a lake (not lake front) house at a gated community in East Texas, about 90 miles from home. We've wanted a deck for a long time, but I've been "too cheap" (my wife's comment) to pay someone to build one. We wanted to put the deck on the front because there are more trees & the front faces East, which will provide shade in the afternoon/evening.

This weekend I finished (except for staining after the treated wood dries) the deck. It's 12 ft by 23 ft. The cost for wood, concrete, hardware & screws was about $1200. Took me about 50 hours to build. I spent several other hours on the design. If I had paid someone to build, it would probably have been about $4000. Not bad for a "gray hair old grandfather" as my grandkids call me.

Between the start & finish of the deck, the house was painted.

The top picture shows the before. The completed deck in shown in the bottom picture.

Cheers, Tom

Very nice Tom!

I wondered why you bothered with a railing since it is so low to the ground but then I thought, well maybe....

drink.gif might be a good reason.  smile.gif  Enjoy!

Yeah, I wondered about that too. Maybe not at all. Let it "float" and watch your step. (separation or settlement)

As shown in the attached picture, I used Liquid Nail construction adhesive to glue boards to the concrete poarch. The deck boards were then screwed to the glued boards. Worked like a charm.

I added the railing, not for safety, but for "looks" and for a bit of privacy when we're sitting on the deck.
Cheers, Tom

Beats tearing out the concrete! Pictures of the progress of construction are great. We took dozens as our house was being built, and it has helped on more than one ocassion.

I also made a "map" of stud locations as well as ducts in the walls and pipes (all pvc). Whenever I want to find a stud, I look at my "map" - have never needed a stud finder, and have never missed a stud.

I did find a pipe once though. oops.gif I was just moving something higher that the contractor had placed on the wall. I didn't consult my "map". Put a  nice hole in the vent. Had to patch it.

Hey Tom,

Now that you're done, I've got some stuff around here that you might enjoy working on...

Nice work!!! Put on a porch on the house, adjoined by a deck between the house and garage about 3 years ago, and it was one of the best things we've ever done... I laid every board on the deck and on the porch, with framing help from my great neighbor and master carpenter friend, and it has been well worth all the effort... now I gotta connect up those porch ceiling lights that have been wired all this time... it never ends!!!

Enjoy!

If it lifts/curls you could still use 3" tapcons right through both layers.

Looks good! coolio.gif
