« on: January 31, 2003, 01:58:00 PM »
I was told that apple's doenload of iDVD3 and iPhoto2 would be available for free download today, Jan. 31-03.  I went to the site and there was no downloads available from apples site.

Anyone knows what happened to the downloads and when they will actually become available?

Just DL and installed, without probems, both iPhoto & iMovie via the Software Update preference. Both apps seem to work as advertised with no known problems elsewhere.

After the installation, I repaired permissions, of which there were many. This also went without fault.

And, thanks to Knowledge Base Document 107136, the list of Installed Updates now works.

Ya done good Steve!

Just a word of caution for those with little hard drive space, iPhoto 2 takes up over 80 MB as installed, but if you get rid off all those extra language files (can be done multiple ways, including through Get Info, and IS safe to do), you can trim off over 60 MB!

Otherwise, everything is going as planned. Now, if they could only release the next Safari update...

Hello all,
I tried three times last night to run the imovie update. It seems to have gotten "stuck" each time. Never at the same spot though.

The iphoto went beautifully. Just really confussed as to why the imovie is being so fickle.

Anyone else having those issues ? I go though software update, running OS 10.2.3 and never had these problems before.

Thanks

Mike - Great info, knocked it down from 80 MB to 18.7.

Dan - Highlight the iPhoto app but don't double click it to open it. Then do File/Get Info and click on the arrow at Languages. Highlight the ones you'd like to get rid of and hit the Remove button. Easy!

Another thing you can do is run a program such as MonoLingual. This program will hunt out all language support files you don't want, and get rid of them. A nice way to save 300 MB (that's what it was on a brand new Jag install for me). Completely safe, and actually speeds your machine up (by getting rid of tens of thousands of files).

Thanks.  I kept Spanish so I'm down to 23 mbs

Ok, testing the limits of "there are no dumb questions"    here goes--if I use a program like MonoLingual to get rid of  all those extra languages on Jaguar (I missed the option on the install) does that effect the translation channel in Sherlock in anyway? (I do some work that requires me to translate several languages from time to time, and the Sherlock translation channel is a nice one to use.)

No, it doesn't affect things like that, Rob.
That translation channel has nothing to do with the inner mysteries of the OS language system options.
In my early days with OS X, though, I had exactly the same thought as you regarding what could happen with a range of apps if I ditched all but English and French.

But since then I have ousted most languages using  MOX Optimize (an app to be handled with care and "overlapping" with what a number of other 3rd party apps do separately or together), and this has saved me quite a heap of disk space with no ill effects.
My computer still happily displays pages in Japanese, though I haven't got a clue what they mean.

Thanks Nick. I kind of/sort of knew that, but the last thing in the world I wanted to do was post a thread that began with "Shortly after getting rid of all languages (except English) in Jaguar, the translation part of Sherlock wouldn't work. Does anybody know why??"
