WOW.gif I only wish I had a broken eMAC to do this with!   I'll bet the resulting computer weighs 1/3 of the amount it originally weighed!  NEAT HACK!

I looked over it again and it's really not at all that dangerous; getting the CRT and analog board out is the worst of it!  I'd do it if I had the time and money!

Pretty nice and straight forward mod. Probably should add the cost of a 'sacrificial' screwdriver. Thinking.gif eusa_dance.gif

Another Mac project I came across, this guy apparently put a different computer into this old MAC Plus (?) but I'm interested in the details:

Might be possible to put one of the mini-MAC's inside an old MAC Plus!  This guys website has more pictures:

I've gotten an email from the guy who made up the Yellow Banana (his name is Fred Good) and he pointed me to this site that put a miniMac into an old Plus type case:

Looks like something fun to do!

Yep, I'd get your Dad to do this if he has experience with such things; otherwise find a television repair shop and see what they'd charge to do this (they can probably help you with disposal of the bad CRT, there are regulations about how that is done in a lot of places now).  I have seen projects that take the iMAC and put it into different cases and I even saw someone who took one and mounted it inside one of those 19" - 20" CRT type Studio Monitors with the three legs that look like big iMAC's!  This project was a lot of work and I wouldn't recommend it.  The LCD thing at least looks approachable and a great learning experience.

Dad's very handy
i was reading about how to do it
and if he has one hand behind his back and wears a rubber glove while discharging it,
much damage seems highly unlikely.

our dump recycles lots of that stuff...

Thanks Gunug

Funny story: When I was working at the University of Kansas I spent quite a bit of time working around a experienced electronics technician who worked on a lot of the laboratory equipment.  They had these electrophoresis power supplies that were in demand a lot and broken a lot; he usually had 2-3 on the bench at a time working on them.  One day a PhD came in looking for a fixed supply and this technician was busy and told him there was a working one on the counter.  Well instead of looking at the label that clearly said "Fixed" on the top he decided to plug another supply in to "test" it.  Well the second he plugged it in there was a huge popping noise and the power line was blown out of it's socket and shot across the room.  The PhD, who was standing in a billow of smoke, said with a cough: "Not working!"  oops.gif

I've got a slot-load iMAC case for a MACQuarium; it will probably take a lot of silicone adhesive!  Not in a hurry to do it though!   smile.gif

Hi,  Steve_J

Is that a  shay in your avatar?

Yes, it's a live steam G scale model of a 13 ton, two truck, two piston, open cab Shay.  One of my hobbies is garden railroading and my wife bought one for me for my 65th b'day.
