Dalmation G3 500Mhz System Upgrade
« on: July 04, 2006, 12:27:49 PM »
Just curious,

My daughter has a Dalmation slot loading CDRW i-mac, which has been running on Jaguar... I'm just wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade to Panther on her machine... I think that from what I've read, Tiger is not going to work well on her machine, because it may be too CPU intensive... but I'm not sure how well Panther would work either... She'd like to be able to use a newer version of Safari that won't work in Jaguar, and there are some of the other things that none of us liked in Jaguar anyhow... but I don't want to spend the $$$ on a system that won't work...

I've upgraded the RAM to 1 GB, fyi.

Any thoughts? Or is it time for a Mini?

Thanks,

Chris K biggrin.gif

Happy Fourth everyone!!! cheer.gif

Panther will be better than Jaguar on that machine. smile.gif

Upgrade to 10.3.9 for the newer Safari.

I agree Tiger would be a step backwards.

Go for it. smile.gif

Wow, that was quick!

Kelly, that's pretty much what I thought... thanks as usual! So far the best price on a CD version that I've found is $59 from Applerescue.com...

You could install over a Network from another machine. smile.gif

But that wouldn't help to Boot it with Install Disk if needed.  Thinking.gif

Aye, that's the rub for sure... and I wouldn't want to render my daughter "bootless" now would I?

I thought about trying to install over a network from my machine, but I have a G4 MDD dual 1.25, and I don't think that install disk would work on the i-mac, and well, you know, the license, etc...   huh.gif And I would have to do it over an airport network (gee, that could be a ton of fun to do that, huh?)

She should definitely have a boot disk.  Thinking.gif

It was reported to me that my old B&W 350 — long handed down — with 512 megabytes of RAM, is running Tiger as fast as it ran Panther (which, I suspect, isn't saying much, but nonetheless. . . .)

It can read DVDs, though.

I question that Tiger would run as well as Panther on that machine.  Thinking.gif

I've got a Panther disc that I bought.

I never used it, went directly to Tiger.

Yours free if you pay the shipping.
