I was born in 1955 but I do like a lot of that music; I get "funny looks" from the young turks in the office when I play that stuff though!

I had an old friend who said, "Anyone who misses the good old days didn't live in those days".  There is some truth in that, but, even if true, the 50s has to be an exception.  I graduated HS in 1956 and college in 1960, and this period was a golden time in my lifetime.   smile.gif

My Dad had Hudson Hornets until Hudson merged with Nash in 1954.  WOW.gif  What a car!

thanx.gif  I really enjoyed the flash back of memories.

At some point in history my grandfather had a Hudson Terraplane (sp?) and he was a mechanic who worked for Hudson/Nash/Rambler and also worked on aircraft and Cushman 3 wheelers for the post office.

The Terraplane brings back another memory.  My Dad had a pilot friend in the 40s who owned a 1938 Terraplane.  He liked to do stunts in a bi-wing airplane, and, unfortunately, one day failed to pull out of a downward, looping stunt.   tears.gif   His parents kept the Terraplane until they died many years later.

I was born in the 40s, so a good part of my adolescence was in the 50s. I was born and raised in the south (Virginia born, Carolina bred). I remember when radio stations were segregated, "white" stations and "negro" stations (though the "N" word was actually used); on the white stations we listened to Pat Boone's version of "Tutti Frutti", but because it was "forbidden", we tuned to WPAL and listened to Little Richard instead. Of course, in our world, there were two musics: there was Elvis, and there was everyone else. I remember my dad shaking his head as we listened to Del Shannon's "Runaway", muttering how could we consider THAT as music. The more the adults ranted about this "race" music, the more we loved it!
Today, my kids (aged 8 yrs to 28) listen to Rap, and I shake my head and mutter how can anyone consider THAT music! What goes around ...

I graduated from Bowling Green High School in '53 and BGSU in '57.

Music sure has come a long way since those days, except in the wrong direction. Why do all the pop ladies all sound alike with no voice, except Celine Dion. Now that lady has a set tof vocals!

Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Guy Lombardo, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Sammy Kaye, Paul Whitman.  And the singers, Vaughn Monroe, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Dina Shore, Kate Smith, a kid named Frank Sinatra.

You young folks missed a lot! Some of you may not even have seen Kilroy's signature!

... Mom made matching mother/daughter poodle skirts. I was mortified. ohmy.gif

...coudn't wear penny loafers, only the 'hoods' wore them. I had Spaldings. rolleyes.gif

... went from an old Ford to a Rambler then graduated in '59 to a Chevy Kingswood wagon.
... rode in the third seat facing backwards all the way to Florida (and back) to visit our grandparents.

...fond memories of my brother and I playing with our Dinky Toys (Army set) in the garden. We were able to recreate a battlefield as long as we didn't disturb the flowers. BTW, I came across those toys a few months ago at the folks' house while cleaning. smile.gif

...trying to convince Dad to stop at a Dairy Queen when we knew we were going to be passing one... (we called it a 4-17 which stood for the position of the letters D and Q in the alphabet)

...playing 'one a cat' stick ball in the street

...never being able to leave the property after dinner (oh yes we all ate together at the same time) if we were allowed out at all

...and so much more...  smile.gif

Don't throw them out! Collectors are paying small fortunes for good ones wink.gif   Over here the main "toy" auction firm is Vectis. The link should take you to the next Dinky Toys auction (July 11)

Boy do I remeber! I was born in 1933, graduated HS in 1951 and graduated from Universitry on 1055. I was married two weeks after garduation and attended grad school until 1960. I do remeber the big swing bandsx, sharing ownership of a Model A Ford, driving up and down our main street waving at all the gals, sneaking across the PA state line to New York where you could drink at 18!!

I remeber my dad and I going to Cleveland on sundays to watch the Cleveland Indians play a double header. I remeer dating at 13 and your steady held your wallet and she paid for the hamburgers and cokes whern we were out.

In some way I feel they were better days than now although we had the Soviet scare, atom bomb survival training, and McCarthyism. I think we were kinder then less ruthless and our core values were in place.

I remember the cars, music, school, school uniforms, first girlfriend, boys club, boys scouts, neighborhood gangs, coal fired furnace and radiators. I remember soldiers, wars-( Congo, Korea), segregation & racism, neighbors accused of communism.

I remember when route 20 (two lane) out of Boston was a major highway to the West Coast and when they built the super highway (90) behind my house destroying a neighborhood, forcing us to eventually move.

I remember watching a neighbor, Bob Cousy and the Celtics practice and play at the local park. The controversy over Bill Russell the first black man in the game.

I was to young to drive and to old to ignored the news of the day. I was a product of the 50's but welcomed the 60's

Age, environment and being the youngest in the house I can remember many cars and motorcycles, and arguments over which one was the best or the fastest, we would end up at the local speedway racing around the track. In the battle between a 1957 Ford police 352 interceptor and a 1958 Chevy 348 Impala, the Chevy won in 1958 at Westboro speedway, but the brother in the Ford got the girl. wink.gif
