sluggish keystrokes

Am trying to convince friend of mine to upgrade to OS X but he is leery. Ever since he upgraded to OS 9.2.2 he experiences veery slow keystrokes when trying to compose email in his Entourage program. Gets extremely slow response until he does a restart - and then things seem to clear up.

Any clues onhow I can help him or advise him.

It all depends on his Mac model. If it's a really old model, like for instance a Snow iMac, your friend might be better off with Panther. But for sure OS X in many cases is zippier than OS 9.

Do you know how much RAM the machine has? It takes a lot, in comparison to OS 9, to run OS X.

My friend's MAC is aa G4 PowerMac Tower  - got it in CY 2000  - I think it is an AGP model (??) and he has 640 mb RAM - running OS 9.2.2.

You have probably already told him to check the key repeat rate in the control panels.  It is in a different location in OS X but at times that will make a difference in either one for me.  Also under OS 9 and earlier, the setting on mouse speed might affect the typing rate.
If that doesn't help, I like This download which sounds like old manual typewriter, and he will 'think' he is typing faster!

This may apply. Go down about 2/3 of the page to find the discussion on Outlook and Entourage being very slow especially after waking from sleep. His tower is among those affected according to the Apple article.

Is your friend using any third party applications like TypeIt4Me? Sometimes they can slow things down if he doesn't have an updated version. Also the FaxSTF program is often cited as interfering with net related activities in OS 9 and early versions of X.
