Have you tried deleting Adobe Cache files? ~/Library/Caches/ and hard drive/Library/Caches/ I don't even have any, but I'm using Elements, not the full enchalada!
You probably do have some files in ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/ and the same path in the hard drive. After 'deleting' PS, make sure any of those files are deleted, also.
Reinstalling some programs does not over-write all pre-exisiting files, so you may end up still having corrupted files/prefs/settings/etc. even after a re-install. Of course, corrupted fonts can cause exactly the symptoms you are reporting, also.
BTW, can you read the splash screen and see what is being loaded up until the stall/crash/abort?
