Connecting Al 15" video out to an off-beat projector?
« on: July 19, 2006, 02:43:50 AM »
I recently lectured at the University of Illinois/Chicago. The MicroPhysics lab has a ceiling-installed projector to which  a Wintel laptop may easily be connected. When I brought in my 15" Al laptop, its DVI output socket dis not match the input plug for the projector. What was strange was that the projector is a VGA system but I have not been able to match the Mac's DVI output plug to the projectors VGA input. Its plug was not the standard narrow VGA unit. Rather, it was wider than my laptop plug and did not have the horizontal blade at one side.

Does anybody have an idea where I can get a dongle that will connect and match my laptop's DVI output plug to this type of VGA input plug. I do not know the age or model of the  Wintel laptop but I suspect it is about four years old.

Thanks for any help,

Do any of <these> look usable? Or are you trying to use the plug that 'proposes' to be have a DVI plug on it now? I suspect it is not easy to access the VGA input near the ceiling...

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

ABD,

They run a long cable under floor and up wall  to the ceiling projector. I will talk to their tech support tomorrow to try to identify the right dongle and the type of video out their Wintel laptop uses.

Tom:

I suggest starting at the other end. Get the name/model of the projector. Call the manufacturer and see what they suggest. Can preclude a lot of angst.

Who knows what that "long cord" is really attached to?

Years ago, I used to have to handwrestle with some manufacturers to even repeat the word "Mac".

The last time I needed to get similar information, no problem, plus positive results.

While doing some research for a TV purchase, I came across the FlatTVPeople site. There is a 'tutorial' on cables/connections there and may have an answer to your question. Is this the connector you're trying to match: <DVI-I or DVI-D>? Scroll down near the bottom of the window or search for "DVI". Apparently, there is no real standard yet...wallbash.gif
