Kind of OT: (I guess) FREE COMPUTER!
« on: August 22, 2006, 07:15:40 PM »
I have a Power Computing, PowerCenter Pro 210 which is souped up with a few extras. In it's time, it was the top of the line, one of the fastest computers available!

Here's a rundown of what it has:

Hardware overview
Machine ID:   108
Model names:   Power Macintosh
Keyboard type:   Apple Extended Keyboard
Processor info:   PowerPC G3
Machine speed:   390 MHz (see below)
Nanokernel version: 2.27
Nanokernel pool extends: 0
Nanokernel scheduled CPUs:1

----------------

Mac OS overview
Finder:   9.2
System:   9.2.2  US
Active enabler:   None
QuickTime:   6.0.3
CarbonLib:   1.6
File sharing:   is on
Multiple Users:   Not installed

--------------

Memory overview
Disk cache:   8160K
Virtual memory:   513 MB
Used on volume:   Bruce's Box
Built-in memory:   512 MB
Location   Size   Memory type
J17   128 MB   DIMM
J16   128 MB   DIMM
J15   128 MB   DIMM
J14   128 MB   DIMM
Video memory:   32 MB   (upgraded)
External L2 cache:   Not installed

---------------------

I'm just looking for a home for this old guy. If you're interested in classic machines and willing to pay the shipping, I'll pack it up in it's original box and send it to you!

The original booklet is hiding somewhere, but I have the original installer disk (kind of obsolete with all the upgrades), the booklets on the XLR8 MACh Carrier G3 ZIF and Radeon Mac Edition video card. If I ever come across the Power Computing booklet, I'll sent that too.

If you're interested, contact me: bforsberg at mac dot com. If I get more than one reply, the first responder will get first choice.

I haven't a clue how much shipping will be, but once I have it packed up and weighed, we can figure out the best (least expensive) way to ship it.

Thanks,

Bruce

I know how it is with an old friend. You want to send it to a good home. yes.gif

But if you don't get any response and would consider 'parting out' the hardware, I would be interested in the Radeon Mac Edition card. I have one in my 9600 and have been occasionally looking for another to run my second monitor. Running X on these old machines can be tricky and finding workable cards is like a treasure hunt.

Good luck.  smile.gif

Thanks Kris, I hadn't concidered parting it out. Good ideas as a last resort, before recyling the rest.

Bruce, you might want to post this topic at the PowerWatch forums if no one is a taker here.

My first computer was a PowerComputing PowerCenter 150 desktop model and man that thing was a real workhorse and a speed demon. At the time, I was in school and we used the latest Macs for some of our stuff and I was so happy to come home to my clone! And for an equally equipped Mac model I would have had to dish out $1,000CAN more! And that's how I heard about the website, I would go there for my news and read about new PowerComputing models. Most people don't know this but PowerComputing got the G3 out first! and once it was out it was much faster than the Mac. That's when His Steveness got angry and pulled the plug on all Mac clone makers.

PowerWatch was the website Jeff Keller started to review PowerComputing models, post the Apple and PowerComputing news, give the specs of every PowerComputing model, benchmarks, head-to-head comparisons with equivalent Mac models, etc. He also started a PowerComputing users' forum.

While the Mac clones are long gone, the forums are still there. Some people still pop in there with upgrade cards questions and stuff.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Ive got a G3 Tower that the local school didn't want, as they got a whole new bunch of Macs.  iMacs.

So there is a private school nearby, and they need one for their photo classes.  I will take OS 9 off and put Tiger on, and get rid of my stuff off of it.
Someone here told me how to clean it up, and get it ready for them.  I better look for those instructions, I printed them out, but with a busy summer, and guests, heaven knows where that printout is.
I should have done it last year, but this year, I promise!

Thanks Bruce!  I look forward to receiving it!  I'll consider it an early/late birthday gift (early because it's not till this friday and late because it'll surely come after friday).  I'll get rid of at least 2 PC's and I'm thinking of installing Appleshare IP on top of OS 9 on it!

Sorry Gailwin!  Have you got an MAC IIsi yet?  Maybe I can ship one your way!

I always preferred the "down chimes" death chime over the broken glass sound!  smile.gif
