Not everything old is worthless!
« on: August 26, 2006, 08:13:51 PM »
Best mouse I ever used isn't a mouse.  It is an Alps Glidepoint.  Of course when Macs started using USB connections, it wouldn't work any more.  Got an adaptor, and it works fine on my iMac Igloo or on my iBook either one.  Much easier on my wrist and hand and very accurate.  Wish I had used it sooner.
Now if someone would tell me where I could get free software for hooking up a 250 mb internal Zip Drive,  I'll go back to the Habitat store, and give them the $5.00 for it.

AFAIK, the drivers to use Zip devices have been built-in to the OS since OS 8.x.  I can't imagine that this same ability does not also exist in OS-X, but I've been wrong beef-ore.

IMO the hard part will be to find a free slot both physically [one that's the right size] and on the right type of bus [IDE or SCSI].

At first I just that Weldiger was taking a cheap shot at me!  In my shop the young turks are always saying "We'll never need that" just before they throw something away and probably 2/3 of the time they're wrong!   sad.gif

Hey is anyone else seeing that Daryl66's avatar picture is missing?  Where do they go; and who decides when they come back?  The Shadow Knows. . .

Love the topic title!

I was teasing Liz about collecting things (on her computer) the other day... Well, my Mom was a collector. Today, I found a book, and Lisa found another, that was titled similarly. I don't think Mom needed to read them. She came by it naturally.

Weldiger, I'm a little muddled - are you wanting to install the Zip drive in something other than the igloo iMac or the iBook? (Because you can't install it in either of those machines!)

Parker's suggestion that you get an external case - USB or FW - is probably the way to go, if you're convinced you need one. Gives you flexibility to use it with any machine.

However, what kind of connection does it have? If it's a SCSI connection, you're probably out of luck. If it's an IDE/ATA connection you should be fine.

And even though the Zip drive may be cheap, it's media is nowhere near as cheap or ubiquitous as CDRs or DVRs and nor is it as reliable. Plus a Zip disk holds a whole lot less.

Me...I'd forget the Zip drive. I think in a few years it may be akin to owning an 8-track tape deck. wink.gif

i remember when i thought zip 750 was the greatest thing since sliced bread
hah

i went to costco like immediately to buy one
and used it to take music to school (elementary school - 6th grade)
and they ended up suspending my account for using up too much hard drive space on the server

oh well i'm long past elementary school
and i'm already taking up a few gigs on the Central High School District's server
(3 years of accumulated stuff)

but that ended up going back to costco
i think it was broken
i don't exactly remember

as far as i'm concerned... the zip drive technology, as well as the jaz drive, is close enough to obsolete
