Speaking of 'fresh produce'...
On our first trip to Italy, my wife and I went to a restaurant recommended by a Fodor's reader. Service was quite good, language was not a big problem, until...
Judy, sitting across from me, said there seemed to be something 'alive' in my salad. I made a cursory examination and didn't find anything.
A few seconds later, she said there
was something alive in the bowl and it was trying to get
out! That's when I spotted the slug/snail.
I discreetly motioned the waiter to return and suggested he might bring me another salad. He apologized profusely, in Italian and some broken English and took away the salad. Moments later he returned with what was supposedly a new bowl and salad and made a very amusing comment: "The next customer, he comes in and asks for escargot, we give him yours!"
Seems most restaurants get their deliveries early in the morning and in the alley. The produce may sit there for several hours, plenty of time for 'locals' to 'inspect' the fresh stuff!
