Author Topic: Connecting to High Speed Cable Modem (Read 2834 times)

I am taking my Intel iMac over to my brother's house today. He currently has an old PC connected to a High Speed Cable Modem. I am thinking about unhooking his PC and connecting my iMac. I realize I will have to set up my iMac with his ISP info for it to connect.

I have always had dialup so any advice to make this work smoothly would be greatly appreciated.

First of all ask your brother if he has a static IP address or a Dynamic IP address. The latter is provided by the DHCP service.

Unless he's using a Router that probably won't work out well.

The ISP and Cable Modem should be set for his machine alone.

A Router would be different.

You could just add yourself to the Network.

You might try Internet Sharing with the PC.

Unless his ISP ties the connection to a specific mac address on a computer there shouldn't be a problem. My provider did things that way in the early days however now the connection is tied to the mac address of the cable modem.

Open "Mac Help" and type "Cable Modem", you will get several Help Topics choose "Connecting to the Internet using a Cable Modem".

From there you can use "NetworkSetup Assistant" to configure the settings.

This is strange. I pulled up Mac help and punched in Cable Modem. Mac Help is not responding.

If you can't get Mac Help to respond you can also access the "Network Setup Assistant" by going to "System Preferences" / "Network" and choosing "assist me" at the bottom of the window.

Yeah, I came across that,bil. Now it is asking for DHCP Client ID. My brother doesnt know it so I am going to the Providers website.

What Kelly said is possible, but no longer likely. Most cable companies, mine included (charter) have stopped doing that. Actually, I probably wouldn't even worry too much about static vs Dynamic IPs. I don't know of any cable co. issuing static IPs without a very large extra charge. Just make sure your mac is set to configure using DHCP under the ethernet tab. It will most likely just work. If not.... there are more settings that need to be changed. Your chances are much better than even that it will work though. You may have to reset the cable modem after plugging in the mac if The ISP does record the MAc address of the mac, but a simple reset usually will fix this.

Who is the provider? That is usually not necessary it is usually optional, however, try something like "charter.net".... or comast.com.... whatever...

As a rule of thumb anytime anything goes wrong with a cable connection the first thing to do is reboot everything. Shutdown the Mac(or PC). Unplug the router if there is one. Unplug the cable modem. Start from the "outside". Plug in the cable modem and wait 'till all the lights come on .Do the same with the router (if present). Then start up the Mac/PC. If it's a Motorola Cable Modem I still have the diagnostics sheet which tells you what the probable cause of a fault is depending on the status of the lights.

Even if the cable company does tie a connection to a mac address it should be possible to register more than one. My ISP, Blueyonder, (back in the old days

) used to allow me to register up to three mac addresses. Surprisingly enough it came in handy

Thanks for all the advice. I did end up needing to unplug the cable modem then plug it back in.

Now, after using his high speed connection I dread going back home to my dialup. I am going to have to shell out the extra cash for high speed at my house.
