The "Crocodile Hunter" that many learned to dislike due to his careless treatment of his child has died during a dive off the Great Barrier Reef:

Very sad. Even though I found him rather wearing after a while, he was passionate about the animals and sharing his knowledge with all.

I thought it was interesting that he managed to stir up opposition to a tourist crocodile hunting scheme that the government was hatching!

tears.gif  Very sad - he died before his time.

He was a risk taker, and I guess eventually bad things happen.  He died doing what he loved. It was a freak accident as sting ray's can cause pain, but rarely death.

Very sad. His wife grew up near here, and they used to spend time in our town - so loads of folks knew them. Always very friendly and pleasant. I feel for his family.

To expand Gunug's comment about Irwin's "careless treatment of his child:"

From an AP report about Irwin's death:

"His public image was dented, however, in 2004 when he caused an uproar by holding his infant son in one arm while feeding large crocodiles inside a zoo pen. Irwin claimed at the time there was no danger to the child, and authorities declined to charge Irwin with violating safety regulations."

I don't see the point of bringing this up at this time. It is easy to judge another person's actions from a distance.

Saw this sad news on the news this morning.
We dont watch much TV, but we sure did enjoy his shows and thought a lot of him for what he did for the animals.

I wasn't trying to bring up anything that wasn't in the news articles.  I actually can see the video of the thing with his child in a slightly kinder way myself.  I can see a number of besotted fathers trying to show their children something (fireworks, strange animals, whatever) and putting the children a little at risk.  My own grandfather held me over the edge of the Grand Canyon when I was an baby; the picture exists of him doing it.

This is the link to the June TS where we talked about the Tortoise:
