Help! does anyone know which backup external drive will work with
« on: September 04, 2006, 04:51:31 PM »
Hello TS'ers,

I need to get an Iomega zip drive to work with my old Mac. Please see my other topic Clean Reinstall .... for my system specs.  I get very confused with choices. I have a Power Macintosh 4400/200 with a Power Processor 603ev with older type connections on the back. I really need to backup all of my info before wiping and reinstalling my Mac OS 8.5 and 8.6.

When I did a reinstall of my system I accidently deleted the old system folder with my AppleWorks Application in it.  My husband is a teacher and all of his documents are stranded with no way to open them or use them. I felt really bad about having done this. I would like to be able to make it up to him by obtaining a CD with AppleWorks on it so that he doesn't lose his work. I need your suggestions about places that I can obtain  a CD, hopefully, they also have a telephone number, in the event the systems problems that I am experiencing prevents me from using the internet again. Specifically, we were using AppleWorks 6.0.4 (from my old Apple Systems Profiler information).

Thank you for any assistance you may provide.
God Bless,
Myrna  aka MrsLop

I'm happy to help, the older Beige Powermacs, including Beige G3's, all have SCSI type external connections so that is the type of ZIP drive you must have.  These are no longer made but conceivably can be found in many places.  I suspect that the drivers for that drive are still up on the IOMEGA website but I will say I haven't looked for them lately!

This is the link to the website that would have the drivers:

You can have it for free.  just contact me ~ and offer to pay the shipping.

Do you need a pile of blank  Zip  disks

Are you saying that you need a Zipo Drive  and  Appleworks?

I have both.

Myrna,
I'll try to send the ZIP drive and Appleworks tomorrow in the hopes you will have it before the weekend.  Holding only 100MB per disk, you might want to take up Flash1296's kind offer on more disks.

Myrna,
I have twice tried to reply to your PM with no apparent success.  I have never used the PM system and I guess it is smarter than me, although I shouldn't think clicking on a Send Message button would require many smarts.  At least I was smart enough to save a copy of my second attempt:

Myrna,
oops.gif I sent a PM reply earlier, but my "Sent Items" folder indicates no such PM was send.  I will try again.

First, I would never think of asking for payment for either the Zip drive & AppleWorks or for postage.  I am just happy the now unused stuff can be of assistance to you while wrestling with your presently unruly computer.

You should need no adapter, but you must install the software to allow your computer to recognize the ZIP drive.  The included installation CD should be all you need, but, if not, software is still available on Omega's web site.

I included two cables: (1) the standard cable that came with the Zip drive that connects to the drive and to the SCSI port on your computer, and (2) a cable needed to connect the drive to a Wallstreet Powerbook.  You will probably never have need for the second cable, but I included it just in case.

My son (same first name) last used the ZIP drive, so I have no idea what, if anything, is on the disks.  Nothing of present value.  Please erase them.

I once installed AppleWorks to check it for my daughter and then removed it.  Virginia Beach teachers used AppleWorks then (probably still do), but my daughter moved to another position within the school system that used MS Office.

Good luck with your computer and the very best to you,
Dave  smile.gif

I'm pretty sure that the drivers for SCSI Iomega zip drives / disks are built-in to OS 8.x.

I think kbear is correct on that. I used my zip drive with OS 8.1. However, my zip drive is internal, so it would have been really dumb for them not to include the driver. But, when I upgraded to OS9, I don't recall having to reload the Iomega driver.

I have found the "built-in" zipdrive drivers to be a little problematic in past years and installing the one's from IOMEGA always seemed to help.  My $.02 worth!

blush-anim-cl.gif DaveF,

My cup runneth over....Thank you again.  FYI, I did receive both of your messages. Perhaps someone in Admin can assist you with the reasons for lack of appearance in your Control Panels.

I am still experiencing extreme difficulty in my attempts to use iCab 3.0.3 or Internet Explorer 5.1.6. I have to resort to tturning off Virtual Memory. In the interim, I am typing this as quickly as I can.

If worse comes to worse, I can use the PC at my husbands school to look in on the board. Obviously, it will have to be done after 3PM, when school is dismissed and after my husband enters his homework assignments, etc...

I look forward to receiving the backup drive. There are no internal Iomega Drives loaded on my system, not according to Apple System Profiler.
I believe that I can get all my husband's documents on the Iomega.

Blessings,
Myrna  aka MrsLop

Myrna, don't confuse the Iomega Drive (hardware - the "Zip Drive") with the Iomega Driver (software - system extension). Your wording makes it unclear which one you are referring to. Also, the "correct" wording (one of several) for where you put the files is "on a Zip disc". Of course, you can use many discs. smile.gif

Dave, did you select the box at the bottom of the page that saves a copy in your Sent folder? Otherwise it doesn't do it.

Kris,

I did manage to overlook it more than once although it's there for everyone to see.   wallbash.gif  Earlier by PM, jepinto tactfully, bless her, told me the error of my ways.  toothgrin.gif

I thank you for one of your ever thoughtful posts, smile.gif

There won't be, until you connect the one DaveF is sending.

I think you're misreading some of the other posts referring to Iomega Drivers which are bits of software required by the operating system to read from and write to different types of storage medis, and the consensus is that in OS-8 they are built-in [when you hook up the Iomega Drive, the OS will just automatically 'know' how to deal with it].
