Reformatting A Windows iPod to Mac
« on: September 08, 2006, 01:15:49 PM »
A friend's iPod is formatted for Windows.  Are there any advantages to reformatting it other than it will be able to accept iPod updates afterwards?

UPDATE:  I went ahead and reformatted it.  It turns out that it was crammed full of files from when it was used to transfer files from a PC to my friend's new Mac, so she was happy to get rid of all that stuff and gain lots of room.

She lost all her iTunes music when her external drive (LaCie) crashed and died within its one-year warranty period.  Getting the music and playlists from the iPod to her new external drives was no picnic.  The Moral:  Keep at least TWO copies of your iTunes music other than what is on your iPod.

no advantages to reformatting it, other than you can access it using both windows and mac.

getting the music off the ipod is pretty easy if you enable hidden folders, however you lose the playlists.
oh... and if you're using USB, forget about it! It'll take you years to get stuff off.

I keep my library on both my iBook and my MacBook. I update the iBook like every few weeks with what's on my MacBook.
