Curious PRINT Box on a AluminumPB (10.4.8)
« on: October 10, 2006, 04:53:36 PM »
What's this all about?

Is there some reason that 3 iterations of my portable Canon inkJet printer appear here?

Only 1 seems to be present in LIBRARY––>PRINTERS––>CANON.

NOT a major issue, but I am curious.

How would you think I might be able to clean these up?

It's a "feature"! Apple gets a nickle for every mention of each brand of printer. Thus there is a cache that keeps track of what printer drivers have ever been used/installed on your Mac ( don't worry, it gets cleaned out every other year ).

Had the same basic results after installing stuff for a new/refurbished Epson printer yesterday. The Printer Utility also shows "(2)" in the name of the printer in its list. dntknw.gif

Perhaps using a 'cache cleaning' utility will erase the multiple entries? Otherwise, get a real cannon and...

In System Preferences/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility, do those same three printers appear? If so, it would be safe to highlight the ones you don’t want and then hit the Delete icon. At least that’s my understanding.

If that serves no benefit, then I dunno. dntknw.gif

As to how they got there, best guess: ABD did it!  rofl.gif

Harv:

You're right on both counts:
  1. ABD did it!
  2. Printer Set-up Utility displayed and then deleted the "excess inventory"
Many thanks, twice over.

PS: one leetle glitch – PSU is, of course, not in my System Prefs, but in Util in the Syst Folder. Of course, since you're on the other side of not only the Continental Divide, but also the Potomac River, your mileage could vary. Probably does. coolio.gif

PS Nr2: And yes, for you sharp-eyed readers, I wanted to print out some advice from a Purdue Horticulturalist on Christmas Cactus. Ours is starting to bloom and it hasn't even had its "beauty sleep" which ought to be starting about . . .  NOW!    sleep1.gif    Anybody out there have an "independent" Christmas Cactus?   Thinking.gif      whistling.gif     toothgrin.gif

Are you sure it's not a Thanksgiving cactus? Those can start blooming in October (rather than the usual November) if they've experienced cool temps to set buds and then warm temps to speed up blooming.

But you probably knew that.  smile.gif

Thankgiving cactus are actually a different species though they have the same flowers. There is also an Easter version which is a third variety.

The easiest way to tell the early bloomers from the later is to look at the lobes on the green segments. The sharper the points the earlier it blooms. Christmas ones have scalloped lobes and the Easter ones have only mild bumps.

Your point, delicately defined.

Ours, sharply seen.

Thank you.   flower-smilie.gif

I've got six Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter cacti that bloom 2-3 times each between early November and late March. In fact, I started noticing buds last week.

I wish I could get them synched so they'd all bloom at once. It'd be beautiful!

Are they also different colors? We're looking at "peach" at the moment.

I've got white, cream, red, magenta (2), and beige. All very beautiful. One winter (January), a squirrel tried to scratch through my window to get at them.

dboh, do you have a large wall calendar near those plants? I'd venture that you don't or it is several months behind. Thinking.gif

One more question to assuage my astonishment.

Does every "holiday's" variety of cactus require 6-8 weeks in the dark for maximum flowering, as does the Christmas "version"?

My plants don't get moved to a special, extra-dark room. They bud on their own -- I think from the coolness and shortened daylight that comes with autum.

I will say one thing different this year compared to others is that they're still sprouting new leaves. It seems very late to me.
