OS-10.4.8
« on: October 12, 2006, 08:52:07 AM »
Is anyone running OS 10.4.8 and if so, are you having any problems with it etc?

I'm running 10.4.7 and it's been running so well I don't want to brake what doesn't need fixing.

BTW, if you did, did you use the combo updater, regular update or software updater.

TIA
Gary S

I've bee running it since it was released... without any noticable problems...
Used the software updater to get it...

OT--- think of you each time I make the run from here to Sheyboygan and pass the Stevens Point sign on Hwy #23 at I-39..

Gary,

As my norm, I did the Combo updater and all is well. I DL’d 10.4.8 as soon as it was released and have yet to notice a problem.  clap.gif

But as always the case, there are those who do.  ohmy.gif

My recommendation is to only do the upgrade after you have made and verified a bootable backup. Repairing Permissions and running DiskWarrior first is thought to be sound advice. Also, some have found it beneficial to install the update with all apps quit and all peripherals (except keyboard and mouse) physically disconnected.

After the install (there may be two lengthy automatic restarts---not to worry), again Repair Permissions, run DiskWarior and then reconnect your peripherals.

Subsequent restarts will (should) be normal or a bit faster.

Harv... great advice and instructions... Look.gif

I always do the repair permissions... and have a current SuperDuper! backup....

BUT I have never worried about or rather taken the time to disconnect the goodly number of USB and FW devices 'hung' on my G5 iMac...   Am I really tempting fate??

I'm not really sure under what (if any) conditions that applies. Apparently, it is to preclude the computer from "seeking" the peripherals during the install and somehow interfering with the install. The rationale is that even with the devices turned off, the computer will seek peripherals provided there is a device connected to the computer. Ergo the physical disconnect, ideally at the computer end and not at the device.

Far over my head/beyond my depth am I. Just because I read that somewhere does not make it so. Even MFI had posted "incorrect" advice.

All said, I do it because it is easy for me to do and can't hurt...and it may just help.  dntknw.gif  huh.gif

Perhaps some clever chap or chappete, who really knows his/her stuff will chime in. eek2.gif

Not that I'm clever, but...

I believe the "disconnect" peripherals got started some years back when there were coruption problems caused by external F/W drives being present. Apple may even have stated that they should be disconnected but some people who didn't had their drives wiped clean for them.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think MFI has always suggested removing everything except the mouse and a wired keyboard.

I upgraded to 10.4.8 with Combo Updater (have always used Combo, never Software Update…) and have had no trouble. I have not bothered to disconnect peripherals (external firewire hard drive, router, compact flash reader) for a long time. I think the disconnect peripherals relates to the problems that appeared with some, but not all Firewire 800 drives which got corrupted during updates in the early days of Tiger. It is pretty difficult to perform an update of a cloned system on an external hard drive without the drive being connected.

My airport reception on my G5 downstairs seems much worse.  I can't even pick up my wireless router up the stairs only 48 feet away.

Gary,

Hwy 23 crosses U.S. 51 (I39) Midway between Mauston and Montello.

I used to Take 23 across the State to get to Osh kosh (to see my Dad) a few years ago when the WI River Bridge was out at Necedah on HWY 21.
Steve

BTW... I have been running 10.4.8 since it was released.  I simply did the upgrade via Software Update.. no problems.

Ah, that's pretty far South of Stevens Point. Depending on how you look at it. wink.gif

Wireless problems are a known issue with .8. MFI has moved their coverage to the "paid" section, but there should be answers/fixes on Apple's Forums.
