Transferring Pics From iBook To iMac...

I have some images from our Europe trip that I want to transfer from my iBook to the iMac using iPhoto.  How might I best accomplish this?

The same way you would any file.  iPhoto allows you to share the photos across the network, As in view them, but it doesn't actually transfer the file itself.

The way I would do it is to drag the photos out of the iPhoto library into a new folder on the desktop (they will be copied).  Then just transfer the folder across your network.  Or dump the whole folder onto a Compact flash (or whatever your camera uses).  Then just transfer the card reader to the other Mac.

Hi Mayo,
I would network them together, and then make a folder of what pictures you want to move over.  Then drag it onto the icon of the HD of your other Mac.
There are other ways, but I like the networking cause its so easy.
You also can move your iPod music this way too with out running into that problem about having two computers and not being able to move/copy it.
It is a bit frustrating, but once you figure it out, it works fine. I said a few bad words at first,,,,,,,
Oh, we are posting simoultaneously, same info.

In the past, I've just exported the pics from iPhoto to a folder on my desktop and then just used a flash drive to copy/move it from one Mac to another. (I've learned to love flash drives for moving files. smile.gif)

Hey Mayo,

If you have a FireWire cable you can also link iBook with the iMac with the FireWire.

Go to:
System Preferences and choose:
Startup Disk and select the system folder you need, than click on the:
Target Disk Mode button.

The iBook will now restart, but in FireWire mode and will act as one big external FireWire drive.
It will appear on your iMac's desktop and you can copy any files you want.
After this you can just drag the FireWire disk icon on your iMac's desktop to the trash and push (and hold for a second) the power button on the iBook to have it shut down.
Next time you start your iBook up it will start up as normal again.

Thanks much for the replies.  In hindsight I realize that I asked the wrong question...  I am wondering how to handle the files that I downloaded from my camera and have now successfully transferred to my iMac.

I found the files in a folder marked "2006."  There are numbered folders that contain individual image files, as well as "data" files, presumably from the camera. To make things even more confusing, some folders have additional files labeled "thumbs" and "originals."

Having been burned more than once when I mishandled iTunes files, I am being cautious when dealing with iPhoto.  Which of these files should I "drop" into iPhoto?

I'm not too crazy with how iPhoto handles my camera downloads... I would prefer to pick my own download folder, etc.

Mayo...

I agree... I too would like to have more control.  However, if you are going to use iPhoto I would strongly suggest letting iPhoto handle the photo library the way it wants to.  As far as navigating inside the camera's flash card from within the Finder, again just let iPhoto handle it.  Open Image Capture and go to its preferences.  make sure that it is set to open iPhoto when a camera is attached.  Then when iPhoto launches, click the import button and allow iPhoto to import your images.

Once this is done, when you want to do something with an image outside of iPhoto (such as copy it to another computer etc...)  just drag the image from the iPhoto library (from the open iPhoto window) to the desktop (or a predetermined folder etc...).  It will be copied to the new location while retaining the original in the iPhoto library.  Yes, you can navigate to the file via the finder, but this can be confusing, and is not what Apple intends.  Incidentally, you can just drag and drop images into iPhoto as well simply by dropping an image file onto the open iPhoto library window.

If you are like me, you will still have the urge to use the finder, but iPhoto does not make this easy, but if you allow iPhoto to do its thing, it is actually quite easy.

Drag the iPhoto library from the iBook's picture folder to the iMac's picture folder via. Target Disk Mode (on either computer... doesn't matter)

That will create an exact copy of the photo library on your iBook onto your iMac

However if your iBook has iLife 06 and your iMac has iLife 05, this method will not work since iPhoto is NOT backwards compatible.

Here is what I do when our kids arrive and download their cameras(or iPod pictures) onto one of my Macs.
Let them go into iPhoto correctly labeled.
But also you can click on the little hard drive icon that the cardreader gives you on the desktop and there are the pictures just straight from the camera.
Then(select all) drag them into a properly named folder, and you have them all by themselves.  Then burn them onto a DVD or CD or whatever.

Good example,,,,,,,,,When one of our kids came back from a trip on the Aegean and Black sea and deposited the entire contents of the iPod on this Mac, I uploaded the better pictures(yes it did take a bit of time going thru them, but they were indeed lovely), to Shutterfly and had them printed out in duplicate.
Jane

I forgot this, then when you have that folder on the desktop of those pictures that you have separated from iPhoto, then you can do Target Mode, or network your Macs, copy to CD or whatever you want from there on.
These are full versions of the pictures you have in the iPhoto library, all in that other folder. Duplicates.

There is a very easy way to copy photos out of iPhoto--so easy that many people don't ever find it, and end up using iPhoto's "export" command or trying to find the photos inside iPhoto's library.

All you need to do is click on the pictures in iPhoto, hold down the mouse button, and drag them out of iPhoto to wherever you want them to be.

If you want to put them in a folder, click and drag them to the folder. If you log on to another computer across the network, click and drag them to that other computer's hard disk icon. If you connect to another computer by FireWire, click and drag them to the fireWire hard disk icon. No export or sorting through the iPhoto folders necessary. smile.gif
